Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection contains fifty-eight photographs of the Roughton, Cramer, and Carver families.

Samuel Roughton, who was born in England in 1836, moved to Illinois in 1855. He and his family settled in Urbana, Illinois, where Samuel worked in mills and coal mines. Their eldest son, William H. Roughton, was born in 1858 and served the Urbana community as a police officer, Chief of Police, and Fire Chief. William and his wife Myra had two daughters, Ethel and Nellie. He died due to injuries sustained in the line of duty while serving as Fire Chief in 1916.

The collection contains photographs of the Roughton family as well as the associated Cramer and Carver families, most of which were taken in Champaign-Urbana. All but eleven of the photographs are unidentified, but many appear to have been taken between 1890 and 1920, with three items dating from approximately the 1950s.

Mrs. Thomas Booher donated the photographs to the Library in 1970, and they were transferred to the Illinois Historical Survey, predecessor to the Illinois History and Lincoln Collections, in 1981.
