Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Richard Murphy Papers consist of notes, papers, and pamphlets collected by Professor Richard Murphy while at the Illinois Constitutional Convention from 1969 to 1970. Murphy held the position of Parliamentarian at the Constitutional Convention.

Richard Murphy (1903-1985) was a professor of speech at the University of Illinois. He was born in Marienville, Pennsylvania on September 12, 1903. He received his Doctorate degree in Philosophy from the University of Pittsburgh in 1938, and began teaching at the University of Illinois in 1945. He was the co-editor and editor of the Quarterly Journal of Speech from 1957-1962.

This collection consists of notes, papers, and pamphlets from the Illinois Constitutional Convention from 1969 to 1970. The materials primarily consist of proposal numbers 6, 8, and 15, of the Style, Drafting and Submission Committee, as well as miscellaneous amendments and papers. In addition, there are fourteen publications that Murphy acquired while serving at the Convention.

These papers were donated to the Illinois Historical Survey, predecessor to the Illinois History and Lincoln Collections, by Richard Murphy in 1974.
