Scope and Contents: This collection contains a 20-page manuscript of an article entitled "The First Crossing" written by Agnes C. Laut (1871-1936) for Harper's Magazine in 1908. The article concerns Maj. Gen. Abraham Wood's 1670-1674 expedition to the Mississippi Valley. Laut, a Canadian historian, found Wood's narrative, "Supposed to be the Carolina Colonies' first journey to the Mississippi," in the Shaftesbury Papers in the Public Record Office of London.
