Pease-Anderson Family. Papers, 1836-1948

The Pease-Anderson papers contains letters, diaries, business records, and genealogical information pertaining to members of the Pease and Anderson families, including Erastus H. Pease, Thomas Huntington Pease, Amy Pease Stuart, Albert A. Pease, Mahala Anderson, Albert Anderson, and Carrie Anderson Pease.

Erastus H. Pease (1807-1887) was the son of Salmon Pease and a native of Litchfield County, Connecticut. Erastus lived much of his life in Albany, New York, where he was involved in bookselling and paper manufacturing. He married Lydia Fry in 1835.

Thomas Huntington Pease (1837-1900) was the son of Erastus H. Pease. A graduate of the University of Vermont, Thomas worked as a journalist in New York City. He married Carrie Anderson in 1870 and was the father of Albert, Lydia, and Theodore Pease.

Amy Pease Stuart was the sister of Thomas H. Pease. She spent many years teaching school in such places as New York City and Ogantz, Pennsylvania. In 1895, she married Gustavus Stuart, the son of Sir Andrew Stuart and Elmire Charlotte Aubert de Gaspi. Elmire Stuart was the daughter of Phillipe Aubert de Gaspe, author of Anciens Canadiens.

Albert A. Pease (1873-1950[?]) was the son of Thomas H. Pease and the brother of Theodore Calvin Pease. A resident of Oak Park, Illinois, Albert worked as a banker at the First National Bank of Chicago.

Mahala Phipps Anderson (1807-1884) was the wife of Samuel Finely Anderson and resided in Cassopolis, Michigan. She was the mother of Carrie Anderson Pease and Albert Anderson.

Albert Anderson (1841-1862) was the son of Samuel and Mahala Anderson and served in the Second Michigan Cavalry during the Civil War. His letters are to family members and detail his experiences in the Western Theatre. Anderson was wounded and died near Boonesville, Mississippi on July 3, 1862.

Carrie Anderson Pease (1849-1918) was the daughter of Samuel and Mahala Anderson. In 1870, she married Thomas Huntington Pease.

This collection is divided into nine total series. Seven series include the letters of Erastus H. and Lydia Pease, Thomas Huntington Pease, Amy Pease Stuart, Albert A. Pease, Mahala Phipps Anderson, Albert Anderson, and Carrie Anderson Pease. The final two series include miscellaneous Anderson family papers and genealogical information about the Pease, Phipps, and Anderson families.

Mrs. Marguerite J. Pease donated the collection to the Illinois Historical Survey, the predecessor of the Illinois History and Lincoln Collections, in 1991.
