Forbes, Henry C. Papers, 1865-1955 | Illinois History and Lincoln Collections
An officer in the 7th Ill. Cav., Henry C. Forbes worked as a farmer and teacher after the Civil War. He eventually served as business agent and librarian of the Illinois State Laboratory of Natural History, later called the Illinois Natural History Survey. These papers include a copy of his commission as brevet colonel in 1865; a biographical sketch of him by his son, Robert H. Forbes; a picture of him in military attire; an excerpt of one of his letters; and a short paper by Forbes entitled "Grierson's Raid, An Epic of the Civil War."
These materials were acquired with the Stephen A. Forbes Collection.
