This collection contains a few letters, documents, and manuscripts written by, or relating to, George Johnson Barrett (1818-1876) of Pittsfield, Ill., an itinerant Methodist clergyman. His life is briefly sketched in Irving Dilliard's remembrance of his son, the Lincoln collector, who no doubt cherished his father's story of meeting Lincoln. See "Oliver Rogers Barrett, 1873-1950," Journal of the Illinois State Historical Society, 43 (Autumn 1950), 172-73, and Douglas L. Wilson and Rodney O. Davis, ed., Lincoln's Informants... (1998), 436.
This collection of the Rev. Barrett's papers came to the Library in 2014 from Clarendon Van Norman, Jr., who acquired them from the Oliver Barrett auction.
