Scope and Contents:
In 1833, William Arminger Scripps, publisher of the Literary Gazette (London), made a journey to Rushville, Ill., to visit his son, James Mogg Scripps. This collection contains extracts from his diary and letters from this trip. Scripps traveled from Buffalo to Detroit, and across Michigan and Illinois to Rushville. He writes of Black Hawk, with whom he traveled, and also describes Chicago and Ottawa, Ill,
Grace Locke Stripps Dyche of Evanston, Ill., drew these extracts from James E. Scripps, Memorials of the Scripps Family, A Centennial Tribute (1891), and gave them to the Illinois Historical Survey in 1917. See Patricia A. Schaelchlin, The Newspaper Barons: A Biography of the Scripps Family (2003).
