It alone may introduce bills that involve public funds. Government bills introduced in the House of Commons are prefixed with the letter &#8216;C&#8217; and are numbered consecutively from 1 to 200, while private members&#8217; bills are numbered consecutively from 201 to 1000.\u00a0 The Senate or &#8220;Upper House&#8221; is appointed by the Governor General on the advice of the Prime Minister. Senate bills are prefixed with the letter &#8216;S&#8217;, and private bills introduced by the Senate are numbered 1001 and higher. <a title=\"Canadian Parliament - LEGISinfo\" href=\"http:\/\/www.parl.gc.ca\/LegisInfo\/Home.aspx?Language=E&amp;Mode=1&amp;ParliamentSession=41-1\">Current Canadian House and Senate bills<\/a> may be found on the Parliament&#8217;s web site. A Canadian bill follows this path:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Introduction<\/strong>\u00a0The process begins.<\/li>\n<li><strong>First Reading<\/strong>\u00a0The bill is &#8220;read&#8221; for the first time without debate, and printed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Second Reading<\/strong>\u00a0The bill is debated and then voted on and sent to a parliamentary committee.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Committee Stage<\/strong>\u00a0A committee hears witnesses, examines the bill clause-by-clause, and submits a report recommending that it be accepted as is or with amendments, or that it be rejected.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Report Stage<\/strong>\u00a0Additional amendments to the bill may be proposed, debated, and voted on.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Third Reading<\/strong>\u00a0The bill is debated and voted on.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Message<\/strong>\u00a0Once passed, the bill is sent to the Senate, where the process starts again with first reading.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Royal Assent<\/strong>\u00a0The Governor General or a deputy gives the bill Royal Assent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a title=\"Canadian Parliament - LEGISinfo\" href=\"http:\/\/www.parl.gc.ca\/LegisInfo\/Home.aspx?Language=E&amp;Mode=1&amp;ParliamentSession=41-1\">LEGISInfo<\/a>\u00a0is a web site used to search Canadian House and Senate bills. It includes government bills and private members&#8217; public bills for the House of Commons.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Government of Canada - Department of Justice - Consolidated Acts and Regulations\" href=\"http:\/\/laws-lois.justice.gc.ca\/eng\/\">Consolidated Acts and Regulations<\/a> provides simple and advanced search options for current laws and regulations of the Canadian government. This site also provides links to several important resources for case law, bills, regulations, reference documents, income tax law, and frequently accessed statutes.<\/p>\n<p>The <a title=\"Government of Canada - Canada Gazette \" href=\"http:\/\/www.gazette.gc.ca\/index-eng.html\">Canada Gazette<\/a> is the official newspaper of the Canadian government. It includes notices, proposed regulations, final regulations, and acts of Parliament.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Queen's University - How a Government Bill becomes Law - Canada\" href=\"http:\/\/library.queensu.ca\/webdoc\/gov\/bills_federal.htm\">How a Government Bill Becomes Law &#8211; Canada<\/a> provides more detail regarding the legislative process.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Parliament of Canada - LEGISInfo - FAQ\" href=\"http:\/\/www.parl.gc.ca\/LEGISinfo\/Faq.aspx?Language=E&amp;Mode=1\">LEGISInfo &#8211; FAQ<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; describes the five types of bills that can be introduced and how they can become law.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"commons\" name=\"commons\"><\/a>House of Commons<\/h2>\n<p>The House publishes the following sources, as well as committee reports and bills. This site provides the standing committee list, notices of meetings, evidence and information regarding witnesses, news releases, and searchable documents.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Parliament of Canada - Senate - Committees\" href=\"http:\/\/www.parl.gc.ca\/SenCommitteeBusiness\/default.aspx?parl=40&amp;ses=3&amp;Language=E\">Senate Committees<\/a> produce reports and publications on legislation and special issues. This site includes a list of standing and special committees, a schedule of meetings, reports, and publications.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Parliament of Canada - Joint Senate and House of Commons Committees \" href=\"http:\/\/www.parl.gc.ca\/CommitteeBusiness\/Default.aspx?CmteInst=joint&amp;Language=E&amp;Mode=1\">Joint Committees<\/a> of the House of Commons and the Senate provides links to reports, responses, notices of meetings, witness information, and committee lists.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"cabinet\" name=\"cabinet\"><\/a>Cabinet and Members of Parliament<\/h2>\n<p><a title=\"Parliament of Canada - Members of Parliament\" href=\"http:\/\/www.parl.gc.ca\/MembersOfParliament\/MainMPsCompleteList.aspx?Language=E&amp;TimePeriod=Current\">Members of Parliament<\/a> provides current and historical lists of members of Parliament, as well as links to sites containing contact information, caucus and committee membership facts, and previous election results.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Parliament of Canada - The Canadian Ministry\" href=\"http:\/\/www.parl.gc.ca\/MembersOfParliament\/MainCabinetCompleteList.aspx?Language=E&amp;TimePeriod=Current\">Canadian Ministry (Cabinet)<\/a> provides current and historical lists of the members of the cabinet, as well as links to information on membership in caucuses and committees, and previous election results.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Prime Minister of Canada\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pm.gc.ca\/eng\/index.asp\">Prime Minister of Canada<\/a> includes press releases, lays out the government&#8217;s agenda, advertises special government programs, and provides links to information of particular interest to the public.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"judicial\" name=\"judicial\"><\/a>Judiciary<\/h2>\n<p><a title=\"The Supreme Court of Canada\" href=\"http:\/\/www.scc-csc.gc.ca\/\">Supreme Court of Canada<\/a> contains information on the Court&#8217;s acts, rules, and cases, and offers access to its library catalog.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Judgments of the Supreme Court of Canada\" href=\"http:\/\/scc.lexum.org\/en\/index.html\">Judgments of the Supreme Court of Canada<\/a> provides a comprehensive list of Court decisions from 1985 to date, as well as cases pertaining to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. This database is a collaboration of the Supreme Court and the LexUM Lab at the University of Montreal.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Canada Federal Court of Appeal\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fca-caf.gc.ca\/index_e.shtml\">Federal Court of Appeals<\/a> provides information about the Court and its recent activities. It also incorporates a database of the decisions of the Court for 1989 and 1996 to 2007.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Federal Court of Canada\" href=\"http:\/\/cas-ncr-nter03.cas-satj.gc.ca\/portal\/page\/portal\/fc_cf_en\/Index\">Federal Court of Canada<\/a> is the national trial court of Canada. It hears disputes arising in the federal domain, claims against the government of Canada, and suits in federally regulated areas. It also includes a database of the Court&#8217;s decisions and files, including lists of hearings and dockets.<\/p>\n<p>The <a title=\"Canadian Legal Information Institute\" href=\"http:\/\/www.canlii.org\/en\/index.html\">Canadian Legal Information Institute<\/a> is a database for case law at the federal and provincial levels. It is searchable by date, full text keyword, title, name, and so on.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"stat\" name=\"stat\"><\/a>Statistics<\/h2>\n<p><a title=\"Statistics Canada\" href=\"http:\/\/www.statcan.gc.ca\/start-debut-eng.html\">Statistics Canada<\/a> is the most complete source of Canadian statistics. It includes data collected through Canadian the census, which is carried out every five years and is available here for 1996, 2001, and 2006. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.statcan.gc.ca\/search-recherche\/index-eng.htm\">search page<\/a> provides advanced search options and categorizes the results by data type (e.g., summary tables, analytical studies, and detailed tables and publications).<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Statistics Canada - Census of Canada\" href=\"http:\/\/www12.statcan.ca\/census-recensement\/index-eng.cfm\">Census of Canada<\/a> contains data gathered through the agriculture and population censuses of 1996, 2001, and 2006.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Statistics Canada - Finding and Using Statistics\" href=\"http:\/\/www5.statcan.gc.ca\/bsolc\/olc-cel\/olc-cel?lang=eng&amp;catno=11-533-X\">Finding and Using Statistics<\/a> is a step-by-step guide from 2007 to locating, reading, and using data contained in Statistics Canada.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Statistics Canada - Historical Statistics of Canada\" href=\"http:\/\/www5.statcan.gc.ca\/bsolc\/olc-cel\/olc-cel?catno=11-516-X&amp;lang=eng\">Historical Statistics of Canada<\/a> provides an indexed list of sections, as well as subsections for retrospective data up to 1999.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"other\" name=\"other\"><\/a>Other Sources<\/h2>\n<p><a title=\"Parliament of Canada - Library of Parliament\" href=\"http:\/\/www.parl.gc.ca\/About\/Library\/VirtualLibrary\/index-E.asp\">Library of Parliament<\/a>, a product of the Information and Research Service, produces research publications for Parliament and catalogs documents that are indexed and searchable by subject category. The Library of Parliament includes the Information and Document Resource Service, which responds to questions of members of Parliament.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Government of Canada Publications - About the Depository Services Program\" href=\"http:\/\/publications.gc.ca\/site\/eng\/programs\/aboutDsp.html\">Depository Services Program<\/a> is the official government site for Canadian depository libraries. It offers a weekly checklist of documents; a catalog for document searches; electronic publications that are searchable by corporate author, title, and subject; a list of depository libraries worldwide; and further guides and help sheets.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Government of Canada - Info Source Publications\" href=\"http:\/\/www.infosource.gc.ca\/index_e.asp\">Info Source Publications<\/a> is a tool for finding and understanding Canadian government information and a guide to obtaining information through the Access to Information Act.<\/p>\n<p>The <a title=\"Government of Canada - Web Archives\" href=\"http:\/\/www.collectionscanada.gc.ca\/webarchives\/index-e.html\">Government of Canada Web Archive<\/a> harvests and preserves web pages of the federal government of Canada.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"University of Toronto Libraries - Canadian Parliamentary Publications: A Research Guide\" href=\"http:\/\/link.library.utoronto.ca\/MyUTL\/guides\/index.cfm?guide=parl\">Canadian Parliamentary Publications: A Research Guide<\/a> is an extensive guide to the parliamentary process and related documents. This site was produced by the University of Toronto.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Government of Canada - Canada's System of Government\" href=\"http:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/government\/system\/structure\/index.html\">Structure of the Government of Canada<\/a> includes information on the Sovereign, Governor General, Parliament, and Cabinet.
