Scholarly Communications & Publishing-Pre-Professional Graduate Assistantship, Scholarly Publishing and Copyright

The Scholarly Communications and Publishing unit in the University Library seeks a pre-professional graduate assistant in Scholarly Publishing and Copyright for the 2018-2019 academic year. This pre-professional graduate assistant position is at 33% FTE (approximately 13 hours per week).

The core work areas of this graduate assistantship will be assisting in the development of education and outreach materials, and assisting in provision of services by unit staff  for digital publishing, scholarly communications, and copyright.

The graduate assistant will work with the Scholarly Communications and Publishing staff in maintaining and expanding documentation and interactive tutorials for digital publishing platforms ,such as Omeka, Scalar, and Pressbooks. The GA will assist with the unit’s instructional and outreach activities on digital publishing and issues in scholarly communication, such as teaching workshops and developing outreach materials.

The GA will assist with the publishing workflows and services provided by the Illinois Open Publishing Network:  This includes working with the Digital Publishing Specialist and Scholarly Publishing Research Programmer in publication and editorial workflow tasks, such as inspecting metadata for digital content in publications and reviewing copyedited manuscripts.

The GA also will assist the Copyright Librarian in preparing and implementing instructional workshops and events, as well as preparing materials and content for other campus-wide outreach and education activities.

The GA also will take an active role in maintaining and updating content on the unit website, and will help to develop the unit blog and other social media content. The GA also will work on targeted projects in the unit on an as needed basis.

Potential projects for this position may include:

  • Assist unit staff in creating documentation and interactive tutorials for tools and platforms such as Omeka, Scalar, Open Journal Systems, and Pressbooks, as well as other relevant resources.
  • Assist Digital Publishing Specialist and SCP Research Programmer with editorial and technical workflow tasks, such as inspecting metadata for digital content, proofing of copyedited manuscripts, and working with media files using Editor’s Toolkit and other relevant software.
  • Assist Copyright Librarian with research projects related to copyright, open access, and author’s rights.
  • Actively maintain and update content for the unit website, blog, and social media accounts.
  • Assist with special outreach projects such as Open Education Week and Fair Use Week.
  • Assist Scholarly Communications and Publishing staff with instruction for campus-wide workshops and training on digital publishing tools, and training for the undergraduate research journal program.

Required Qualifications:

  • B.A. in an appropriate area of study;
  • Currently enrolled and in good standing in a graduate degree program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign;
  • Demonstrated familiarity with word processing and spreadsheet programs (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel);
  • Strong communication skills (both oral and in writing);
  • Strong work ethic;
  • Intensive attention to detail
  • Interest in scholarly communications, copyright, digital publishing, and/or open access

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Enrolled in a graduate program at the School of Information Sciences;
  • Demonstrated familiarity with web design, digital publishing software, or graphic design;
  • Familiarity with issues related to copyright;
  • Familiarity with issues in scholarly communications, publishing, and open access;
  • Familiarity or experience with tools and methods used in digital scholarship;
  • Experience with computer programming languages or database design.
