{"id":15988,"date":"2023-09-12T15:11:07","date_gmt":"2023-09-12T15:11:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/funkaces\/?p=15988"},"modified":"2024-04-11T20:43:51","modified_gmt":"2024-04-11T20:43:51","slug":"september-news-and-research-from-the-acdc-issue-23-09","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/funkaces\/september-news-and-research-from-the-acdc-issue-23-09\/","title":{"rendered":"September News and Research from the ACDC\u2013 Issue 23-09"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/funkaces\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2023\/09\/DocNews23-09.pdf\">Click here<\/a> for a printer-friendly PDF of this issue<\/strong><\/h2>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>What\u2019s \u201cregenerative\u201d in agriculture and what\u2019s not?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>We are adding to the ACDC collection a recent article in <em>The Packer<\/em> periodical about confusion involving the current buzzword, \u201cregenerative.\u201d Author Kristin Leigh Lore noted that there isn\u2019t yet a universally agreed upon definition. \u201cThe term is not regulated like organic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Citing a California Agricultural Vision report, she added:\u00a0 \u201cEven so, the \u2018regenerative\u2019 terminology is gaining traction and support like never before due to the belief that \u2018regenerative\u2019 moves beyond the philosophy of \u2018do no harm\u2019 to one of making things better. \u2026 A common thread that connects many definitions of regenerative agriculture is soil health.\u201d\u00a0 She cited five common initiatives described as regenerative.<\/p>\n<p>You can read the article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepacker.com\/news\/sustainability\/rise-regenerative-key-concepts-understand-emerging-movement\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Role of social media: farmers\u2019 protest in India<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>A 2022 article in the <em>Journal of Sikh and Punjab Studies<\/em> addressed the role of social media after the passing of three farm bills in the Indian Parliament. Those laws launched the 2020-2021 Indian farmers\u2019 protest. Author Tejpaul S. Bainiwal analyzed different historical forms of communication involving such conflicts in India.\u00a0 Findings also revealed how social media were used in this protest to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mobilize the masses and organize rallies<\/li>\n<li>Gather funds to support the farmers\u2019 protests<\/li>\n<li>Help combat the dominant narrative<\/li>\n<li>Raise awareness about the protests<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can read the article <a href=\"http:\/\/giss.org\/jsps_vol_29\/13-tajpaul_bainiwal.pdf\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Trends in U.S. vegetarian and vegan eating preferences<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>The latest Gallup Poll (July 3-27, 2023)\u00a0 \u201cfinds 4% of Americans saying they are vegetarian and 1% vegan, in terms of their eating preferences. These figures are similar to what Gallup has measured previously, including 2012 and 2018.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You can read this brief research summary <a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/510038\/identify-vegetarian-vegan.aspx#:~:text=U.S.%20Adults'%20Eating%20Preferences%2C%20trends,have%20been%20stable%20over%20time.\">here<\/a>, including demographics of those identified as vegetarian and vegan.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Boosting awareness of rural issues among students &#8211; through writing<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>In this 2021 <em>Rural Educator<\/em> article, secondary language arts teacher Anthony Olson explained how he changed his English curriculum. She joined us during mid-August with a part-time appointment as she undertakes graduate studies in the School of Information Sciences at the University of Illinois.<\/p>\n<p>Nikki earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in cultural anthropology with minors in English and history from the University of Arkansas. She brings research, international and musical experiences with her as well as prior library experiences from the University of Arkansas Libraries.
