He spoke to Nieman Fellows early this year about how the media can help citizens understand the limitations of climate optimism and adapt in realistic ways.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we\u2019re going to be innovative in agriculture and we\u2019ll be innovative in architecture. We\u2019re going to be innovative in all sorts of things not because we\u2019re brilliant but because we\u2019re up against it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You can read a summary of his remarks in <em>Nieman Reports<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/niemanreports.org\/articles\/climate-change-daniel-schrag\/\">here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Celebrating rural libraries<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>We are adding to the ACDC collection some feedback which Rural Assembly received during April when it invited views about the impact of libraries on people\u2019s lives. Here are some of the themes shared about local libraries:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A refuge<\/li>\n<li>Rooted in history<\/li>\n<li>A family affair<\/li>\n<li>A social hub<\/li>\n<li>Battling misinformation<\/li>\n<li>Freedom (of being surrounded by books and having access to them)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can read the article <a href=\"https:\/\/ruralassembly.org\/celebrating-rural-libraries\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Community radio promotes local\u00a0<\/strong><strong>development across Africa<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>We are adding to ACDC a 2023 report featuring a new radio station in Senegal\u2019s Bassari Country. Run by and for the listening community served, it broadcasts in six local languages.<\/p>\n<p>The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has supported and promoted community radio stations such as this for more than 50 years, globally. Local stations facilitate social interaction, fit well with oral traditions and support democratic processes within societies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat makes a community radio so powerful is its potential as a tool to reach out to people with little or no access to information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You can read the report <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unesco.org\/en\/articles\/community-radios-promote-local-development-across-africa#:~:text=For%20years%2C%20people%20in%20Bandafassi,(Bassari%2C%20B%C3%A9dick%2C%20Coniagui.\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>New smart shelf retail tags help\u00a0<\/strong><strong>\u201cmake products come to life\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A recent article in <em>The Packer<\/em> described how new smart shelf tags are helping an organic and specialty food distributor in North America instantly provide extra digital content about items via hyper dynamic QR codes. Consumers can instantly gain information about nutrition and allergen content, promotional offers, traceability, testimonials, and videos and images.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRetailers never have to source, manage or update content, and the tags include automatically- printed codes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You can read the article <a href=\"https:\/\/thepacker.com\/news\/packer-tech\/smart-shelf-retail-tags-offered-help-shopper-experience\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>\u201cRescuing and reviving rural journalism\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Research findings reported in a 2023 issue of <em>Journalism Practice<\/em> identified a \u201cclear disconnect\u201d between U.S. rural newspaper publishers and their readers about possible funding models. Researchers Teri Finneman, Patrick Ferrucci and Nick Mathews surveyed rural newspaper publishers and rural residents to better understand their attitudes toward funding local news.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOverall, our study found readers are most supportive of events, print subscriptions, e-newsletters, memberships, and donations. \u2026 As a whole, the reader results stand in direct contrast to not only publishers\u2019 perceptions of what readers would support, but also publishers\u2019 willingness to enact mechanisms to diversify revenue streams.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This article is not available by open access.
