{"id":14122,"date":"2020-09-16T21:49:57","date_gmt":"2020-09-16T21:49:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/funkaces\/?p=14122"},"modified":"2020-09-16T22:35:42","modified_gmt":"2020-09-16T22:35:42","slug":"acdc-news-issue-20-09","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/funkaces\/acdc-news-issue-20-09\/","title":{"rendered":"ACDC News \u2013 Issue 20-09"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 id=\"a_href=funkaceswp-contentuploadssites53202003docnews20-03pdfclick_herea_for_a_printer-friendly_pdf_of_this_newsletter_3\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/funkaces\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2020\/09\/DocNews20-09NEW.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Click here<\/a> for a printer-friendly PDF of this newsletter.<\/h3>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Novel food technologies: Are they\u00a0routes &#8211; or barriers &#8211; to healthier diets?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Swiss researchers Michael Siegrist and Christina Hartmann addressed that question in their 2020 <em>Nature Food<\/em> article, \u201cConsumer acceptance of novel food technologies.\u201d They used a narrative review to explore factors that may explain consumers\u2019 acceptance of gene technology, nanotechnology, cultured meat, and food irradiation.\u00a0 Outcomes centered on understanding and taking seriously what consumers think.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2026disruptive food technologies will be needed to progress towards a more resilient food system,\u201d they concluded. Taking into account the factors influencing consumers\u2019 perceptions of novel food technologies during the early stage of development and introduction will hopefully result in a higher acceptance of such technologies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You can read the article <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s43016-020-0094-x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Environmental knowledge brokers: much more than neutral intermediaries<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A team of researchers in New Zealand focused on this broker role in their recent analysis of collaborative decision making about water use and quality in the south island region of Canterbury. Tracking perspectives among community-based groups, they identified flaws in the common view of brokers as helping link knowledge producers and users to objectively translate science into policy-useable knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKnowledge brokers are often portrayed as neutral intermediaries that act as a necessary conduit between the spheres of science and policy,\u201d authors observed.\u00a0 In practice, though, these brokers found their role complex at multiple levels and often conflictual, messy, and value laden. Authors identified kinds of expertise this influential, active, and \u201cprofoundly precarious\u201d role requires.<\/p>\n<p>You can <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1057\/s41599-020-0448-x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">read<\/a> their 2020 article by open access in <em>Palgrave Communications<\/em>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Code of ethics for food journalists<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>We have added to the ACDC collection a code of ethics developed and used by the Association of Food Journalists. It introduces 5 key principles, 3 questions to consider when putting them to practice, and 10 additional guidelines for food journalists.<\/p>\n<p>You can read the code <a href=\"https:\/\/afjonline.com\/ethics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Views Canadians hold about an \u201cobesity crisis\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Recently we added a 2016 research report on results of a national public opinion poll from the Angus Reid Institute.\u00a0 Findings indicated that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Most Canadians (58%) reported someone in their household who was overweight or obese, either themselves or another person.<\/li>\n<li>The vast majority (81%) of those who were themselves overweight or obese said it\u2019s something that worried them.<\/li>\n<li>However, most Canadians didn\u2019t rank the matter of obesity as a crisis<\/li>\n<li>More than one-half (54%) said they viewed it as an issue of personal freedom.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThough Canadians are wary of government telling them what to eat,\u201d \u2026. they expressed \u201chigh levels of support for many of the recommendations the Senate committee put forward.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can read the report <a href=\"http:\/\/angusreid.org\/obesity-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Advice to reporters about need<\/strong> <strong>to cover local community banks <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Shrinking numbers of small community banks and increasing need for credit in agriculture prompted an article on the website of the National Center for Business Journalism. Author Yu Zhang highlighted some recent changes and trends, then offered several story approaches for journalists.
