Such actions commonly involve budgets, hearings, government contracts open for bidding, unclaimed property, and court actions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn recent years, some cash-strapped state legislatures have tried to remove the requirement\u2026\u201d author Maryanne Reed explained.\u00a0 Concerns, however, emphasize that the public loses out when government makes it harder to find out what it\u2019s doing. The author described efforts to retain public notice, noting the special role of rural residents. The Missouri Press Association reported finding its biggest allies among legislators in rural areas, where internet access is limited and local newspapers still have a strong presence.<\/p>\n<p>You can read the commentary <a href=\"https:\/\/niemanreports.org\/articles\/fighting-to-keep-public-notices-in-newspapers\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>How rural Cambodians are using social media, politically<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>With increasing access to internet, they are using quiet encroachment in cyberspace, according to findings reported in a 2019 research article in the <em>Journal of Contemporary Asia<\/em>. Or confer with us at <a href=\"mailto:acdc@library.illinois.edu\">acdc@library.illinois.edu<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Experimenting with hyperlocal rural community journalism<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Re-imagining \u201csocial columns\u201d as community storytelling and using \u201cliars tables\u201d as listening circles are among the approaches described in a new article in <em>Journalism Practice<\/em>. Researcher Andrea Wenzel presented a case study of efforts by one rural hyperlocal online news site in rural Kentucky.\u00a0 She found some bump in subscriptions in relation to one of the two engagement initiatives. Writing in the <em>Journal of Higher Education Outreach and Engagement<\/em>, Jorge Horacio Atiles also highlighted values of the Extension approach to systems thinking and logic modeling.<\/p>\n<p>You can read this open-access article <a href=\"https:\/\/openjournals.libs.uga.edu\/jheoe\/article\/view\/1431\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Upside-down NGO approach to small-scale farm practice adoption: a case study<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Bottom up rather than top down<\/li>\n<li>Two-way collaborative learning<\/li>\n<li>Local empowerment<\/li>\n<li>No financial incentives<\/li>\n<li>Targeting local markets<\/li>\n<li>Maximizing holistic well-being<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These are a few of the special ingredients involved in efforts of a non-governmental organization (NGO) working with farmers in Nicaragua.
