{"id":11320,"date":"1998-01-03T23:08:54","date_gmt":"1998-01-03T23:08:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/funkaces\/?p=11320"},"modified":"2018-03-03T23:14:15","modified_gmt":"2018-03-03T23:14:15","slug":"acdc-news-issue-98-16","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/funkaces\/acdc-news-issue-98-16\/","title":{"rendered":"ACDC News \u2013 Issue 98-16"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><b>How accurate are the market advisory services for crops?\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Two recently added reports in the Agricultural Communications Documentation Center help answer that question.\u00a0 They come from the Agricultural Market Advisory Service (AgMAS) and include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201c1995 pricing performance of market advisory services for corn and soybeans\u201d (published in March 1997)<\/li>\n<li>\u201c1996 pricing performance of market advisory services for corn and soybeans\u201d\u00a0 (published in January 1998)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>AgMAS is a collaborative effort of agricultural economists at Ohio State University, Purdue University and the University of Illinois.\u00a0 It began during 1994 and, since then, has tracked the pricing performance of about 25 advisory services to which it subscribes.<\/p>\n<p>Results may hold special value for communicators interested in topics such as risk communications and the quality, accuracy and economic value of agricultural information.\u00a0 Details are available from the AgMAS web site, which you can view at:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aces.uiuc.edu\/~agmas\/\">www.aces.uiuc.edu\/~agmas\/<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><a name=\"item2\"><\/a><b>Other recent additions about risk communications.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Here are the titles of some other documents that we have added recently to the collection of literature about risk communications, as related to food and agriculture:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cCognitive determinants of risk perceptions associated with biotechnology\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cEffect of risk perception on willingness to pay for water quality\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cFarmer willingness to pay for herbicide safety characteristics\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cDeterminants of unsafe hamburger cooking behavior\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cVoluntary economic and environmental risk tradeoffs in crop protection decisions\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cFarmers\u2019 decision processes and adoption of conservation tillage\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><a name=\"item3\"><\/a><b>Feedback about the \u201cNews and Announcements\u201d page.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>We\u2019re pleased to hear from some readers who find useful information in this news page.\u00a0 Recent examples of feedback:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cThank you for sending this to me.\u00a0\u00a0 \u2026.\u00a0 The capsulized reports of other meetings about what\u2019s going on in our business are very, very helpful.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cGreat idea.\u00a0 Now I just need to tap into this resource.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><a name=\"item4\"><\/a><b>History of NAFB now online<\/b>.<\/h3>\n<p>The National Association of Farm Broadcasters web site recently added a page entitled, \u201cHistory of NAFB.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 Written by NAFB Historian Dix Harper, it describes the development of NAFB during the past 55 years, from its origin in 1943 to its most recent technological development (a 1998 CD-ROM presentation about farm broadcasting).<\/p>\n<p>Actually, this report traces back to the origins of broadcast information for farmers, more than 20 years before NAFB formed.\u00a0 It begins with weather and grain reports aired during 1921, then briefly sketches some highlights in farm broadcasting throughout the U.S. during the 1920s and 1930s.<\/p>\n<p>You can see this history page on the NAFB web site:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nafb.com\">www.nafb.com<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><a name=\"item5\"><\/a><b>Here are calls for papers to be presented at two approaching conferences related to agricultural<\/b>\u00a0<b>communications:<\/b><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>\u00a0Agricultural Communications Section, Conference of the Southern Association of Agricultural Scientists, January<br \/>\n31-February 2, 1999, at Memphis, Tennessee USA.\u00a0 Suggested topics: practical applications of new communications<br \/>\ntechnology; publications, videos and special projects; measurement and accountability; and media relations.\u00a0 December 7 is<br \/>\nthe deadline for abstracts, to be sent by e-mail.\u00a0 For details contact: Ned Browning, Mississippi State University, at<br \/>\n<a href=\"mailto:nedb@ext.msstate.edu\">nedb@ext.msstate.edu<\/a><\/li>\n<li>14th Annual Red River Valley Student Communication Conference, \u201cCommunication, Culture and Change,\u201d April 18-20,<br \/>\n1999, at Fargo, North Dakota USA.\u00a0 Keynote speaker is Everett M.
