P. J. Abdul Kalam framed &#8220;excellence&#8221; as follows:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In 1999, I was in Tel-Aviv.\u00a0 Hamas had inflicted heavy damage on the Lebanese border.\u00a0 The next day, when I opened the newspaper, this was not front page news.\u00a0 Instead, there was an item about a farmer from Russia who had settled in a desert zone in Israel.\u00a0 He had managed to cultivate vegetables and fruits in the area with very high yield.\u00a0 The newspaper was celebrating his success, probably because people look for such news.\u00a0 I consider this excellence in journalism.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He emphasized that journalism can be an effective tool for economic and political development. Murphy 45 years ago in his book, <em>What farmers read and like<\/em>.\u00a0 The principles address decisions about:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Designing eye-catching that draw farm readers into the issue<\/li>\n<li>Choosing subjects that attract keen reader interest<\/li>\n<li>Writing effective headlines<\/li>\n<li>Choosing and using color, photographs, illustrations and other visual elements<\/li>\n<li>Avoiding &#8220;great dangers in editing&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You will see that the feature invites your thoughts and experiences about these decisions and others that influence farm readership today &#8211; and in your area. Fuller (ed.), <em>Community media: international perspectives<\/em>.\u00a0 Palgrave Macmillan, New York.\u00a0 2007.<\/li>\n<li>Kai Hafez, <em>The myth of media globalization.<\/em>\u00a0 Polity Press, Cambridge. 2007.<\/li>\n<li>Phyllis M\u00e9ras, <em>Country editor: Henry Beetle Hough and the Vineyard Gazette.<\/em> Images from the Past, Bennington, Vermont. 2006<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Scientists working with journalists.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A media workshop report we have added from the web site of the American Society of Plant Biologists identified several traits often found in both scientists and journalists: free and independent thinking, competitive natures, curiosity and higher levels of education<\/p>\n<p>With that foundation, workshop speakers offered tips for plant biologists in working with journalists.\u00a0 Among them:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In preparing for an interview, a scientist should learn more about the reporter, publication and its readership.<\/li>\n<li>Have a goal in mind for the interview and deliver a focused message.<\/li>\n<li>Use accurate terminology and not repeat misleading terms if the reporter uses them in a question.
