{"id":11042,"date":"2007-01-01T21:16:19","date_gmt":"2007-01-01T21:16:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/funkaces\/?p=11042"},"modified":"2018-03-01T02:54:12","modified_gmt":"2018-03-01T02:54:12","slug":"acdc-news-issue-07-14","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/funkaces\/acdc-news-issue-07-14\/","title":{"rendered":"ACDC News \u2013 Issue 07-14"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><strong>Focus on food and morality<\/strong>.<\/h3>\n<p>A fascinating array of topics takes front stage for the 2007 Oxford Symposium on Food and Cookery, which features the theme, &#8220;Food and Morality.&#8221; This annual symposium is an educational charity that brings together writers, historians, sociologists, anthropologists, scientists, chefs and others.\u00a0 This year they address the study of food in history, its place in contemporary societies and related scientific developments.\u00a0 Here are a few of the papers being proposed for the 2007 Symposium that is scheduled for September 8-9 in Oxford, England:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;Virtuous food &#8211; selling &#8216;conscientious production&#8217; as moral imperative&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Scientists and food: moral, immoral or amoral?&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;The moral economy of meat in Australia&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Perspectives on the first iron biofortified rice in the Philippines&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Ideology of fasting in the Reformation Era&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Main themes in the theology and practice of modern Christian vegetarians&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;What stories tell children about responsible food behaviors&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;An ethical consideration of pet food&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Information posted at: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oxfordsymposium.org.uk\/\">www.oxfordsymposium.org.uk<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Ten red flags of junk science<\/strong>.<\/h3>\n<p>We have added to the ACDC collection an article from the European Food Information Council that identifies 10 red flags of junk science.\u00a0 The Council suggests being careful if the information contains:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Recommendations that promise a quick fix<\/li>\n<li>Dire warnings of danger from a single product or regime<\/li>\n<li>Claims that sound too good to be true<\/li>\n<li>Simplistic conclusions drawn from a complex study<\/li>\n<li>Recommendations based on a single study<\/li>\n<li>Dramatic statements that are refuted by reputable scientific organizations<\/li>\n<li>Lists of &#8220;good&#8217; and &#8220;bad&#8221; foods<\/li>\n<li>Recommendations made to help sell a product<\/li>\n<li>Recommendations based on studies published without peer review<\/li>\n<li>Recommendations from studies that ignore differences among individuals or groups<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Title:\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/web.library.uiuc.edu\/asp\/agx\/acdc\/view.asp?ID=C25915\">Nutrition news: reading between the lines<\/a><br \/>\nAt <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eufic.org\/article\/en\/food-safety-quality\/risk-communication\/artid\/nutrition-news\">www.eufic.org\/article\/en\/food-safety-quality\/risk-communication\/artid\/nutrition-news<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>&#8220;Courage comes in many flavors,&#8221; <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Said community newspaper editor Laurie Ezzell Brown in accepting a special award during April.\u00a0 She offered that perspective when she and her family were honored with the Tom and Pat Gish Award for courage, tenacity and integrity in rural journalism. This award to the Ezzell family and <em>The Canadian Record<\/em> of Canadian, Texas, was presented by the Institute for Rural Journalism and Community Issues at a banquet in Lexington, Kentucky, during a National Summit on Journalism in Rural America.<\/p>\n<p>Ezzell Brown cited examples of how complex small-town newspapering can be and how local citizens sometimes display stand-up courage. Two generations of Ezzells have edited the weekly <em>Record<\/em> since 1949.\u00a0 Nominators reported that members of this family have &#8220;held local, state and national politicians accountable, fought political extremism, opposed unwise military adventures and helped protect the environment, often against organized and violent opposition.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Title: <a href=\"http:\/\/web.library.uiuc.edu\/asp\/agx\/acdc\/view.asp?ID=C25753\">Courage comes in many flavors<\/a><\/p>\n<p>You can see related articles at:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.texaspress.com\/messenger\/april07\/gish0407.htm\">www.texaspress.com\/messenger\/april07\/gish0407.htm<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ifaj.org\/news\/honoring_courage.htm\">www.ifaj.org\/news\/honoring_courage.htm<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>A snapshot of what Americans know and feel about avian influenza<\/strong>.<\/h3>\n<p>A report we have added from the Food Policy Institute, Rutgers University, highlighted findings of a mid-2006 nationwide survey among American consumers.\u00a0 Some of the findings:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Most Americans (93 percent) indicate they have heard of avian influenza.<\/li>\n<li>Still, most &#8220;don&#8217;t know much&#8221; about it.<\/li>\n<li>They hold conflicting beliefs about recognizing and preventing it.<\/li>\n<li>They &#8220;aren&#8217;t very worried about illness with avian influenza,&#8221; yet &#8220;most report greater perceived risk specifically associated with the consequences of eating chicken infected with avian influenza.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>More than 90 percent say they currently eat chicken; most consider chicken products in the U. S. safe to eat.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Many Americans are unlikely to eat chicken if the avian influenza virus is found inside the U.S.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>According to Institute Director William K.
