The complex was home to Somali and other refugees who were working at a nearby meatpacking plant. His responses during the interview included these thoughts about the rise of fake news:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a strange environment to report in. \u2026\u00a0 more than ever, it\u2019s important to distinguish real reporting from opinion or speculation or even things that are intentionally misleading, so that we know that what we\u2019re reading is based on reality.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a reporter, that means there\u2019s an even higher bar now for establishing what\u2019s factual. \u2026 Especially online, there is a growing body of people who are happy to contest observable facts. We added them from the <em>Fern<\/em> newsletter of the Food and Environment Reporting Network, which is an independent investigative non-profit organization.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>The longest-running U.S. daily farm and home television program<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Congratulations to Lyn Jarvis, honored recently with the Robert O. Sinclair Cup from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and University of Vermont Extension Service.\u00a0\u00a0 He and associates at the University of Vermont have sustained a farm and home television program that has extended for 62 years.\u00a0 Lyn produced, directed, recruited talent, and constructed sets for 27 of those years (more than 7,000 \u201cAcross the Fence\u201d shows) on WCAX-TV, Burlington.\u00a0 Here are several keys for sustained success, as described in his recognition:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>His programming balanced the interests of viewers with in-depth, research-based information<\/li>\n<li>Program information ranged broadly across agriculture, 4-H, consumer issues, and a host of other topics<\/li>\n<li>As a \u201cmedia mentor,\u201d he helped guests feel comfortable before the camera<\/li>\n<li>He coached his colleagues on how to make effective use of television<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can learn more about \u201cAcross the Fence\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/extension\/atfence\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Eight new research reports in <em>JAC<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The second 2017 issue of the <em>Journal of Applied Communications<\/em> (<em>JAC) <\/em>includes these articles:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cMarketing and more: An in-depth look at relationship marketing with new media in the green industry\u201d by Scott Stebner, Lauri M. Ruth<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>JAC<\/em>, a peer-reviewed journal, is published by the Association for Communication Excellence in Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Life and Human Sciences (ACE).\u00a0 You can read these new articles <a href=\"http:\/\/newprairiepress.org\/jac\/vol101\/iss2\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Communications: A key in mapping out Australia\u2019s food future<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Thanks to Neil Inall for alerting us to the new \u201cFood and Agribusiness Roadmap\u201d for Australia. This annual award from the Goldman Environmental Foundation \u201chonors grassroots environmental heroes\u201d from all parts of the world.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Uro\u0161 Macerl, \u201can organic farmer from Slovenia, successfully stopped a cement kiln from co-incinerating petcoke with hazardous industrial waste by rallying legal support\u2026\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Prafulla Samantara of India \u201cled a historic 12-year legal battle that affirmed the indigenous Dongria Kondh\u2019s land rights and protected the Niyamgiri Hills from a massive, open-pit aluminum ore mine.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Rodrigo Tort, \u201can indigenous leader in Guatemala\u2019s Agua Caliente, led his community to a landmark court decision that ordered the government to issue land titles to the Q\u2019eqchi people\u2026\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Wendy Bowman, of Australia, \u201cstopped a powerful multinational mining company from taking her family farm and protected her community in Hunter Valley from further pollution.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can read more about the award and the efforts of recipients <a href=\"http:\/\/www.goldmanprize.org\/prize-recipients\/current-recipients\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Welcome to the ACDC crew<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10692 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/funkaces\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2017\/10\/Hailley.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"118\" height=\"140\" \/>It is a pleasure to welcome Hailley Shaw as a new graduate assistant in the Center. She joined the staff this summer and already has helped expand the Contributed Collections section of the ACDC website. Also, following reviews of documents, she has added nearly 150 citations to the online database.<\/p>\n<p>Hailley is a 2014 graduate of Vanderbilt University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English literature and history. She is working on her Master of Library and Information Science degree here at the University of Illinois, focusing on rare books and special collections.\u00a0 Her previous library experience includes customer service at the Champaign Public Library, Center for Children\u2019s Books, and Urbana Theological Seminary Library.
