{"id":10311,"date":"2017-08-08T16:30:54","date_gmt":"2017-08-08T16:30:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/funkaces\/?p=10311"},"modified":"2018-02-25T00:32:44","modified_gmt":"2018-02-25T00:32:44","slug":"acdc-news-issue-17-08","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/funkaces\/acdc-news-issue-17-08\/","title":{"rendered":"ACDC News \u2013 Issue 17-08"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><strong>Highlighting \u201cthe yearly death of ag data\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Writing in <em>Precision Ag<\/em>, Nathan Faleide observed recently, \u201cWhen you look at all the data that has been somewhat carelessly created by the various machines and controllers out there, it made me think that most of it is wasted and never used for anything.\u201d He called for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Greater effort in using the data<\/li>\n<li>Better education about what can be done with data and what the real benefit is<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>He noted the challenge of data privacy.<\/p>\n<p>You can read his May 2 commentary <a href=\"http:\/\/www.precisionag.com\/systems-management\/data\/opinion-the-yearly-death-of-ag-data\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>How Midwest corn farmers are adapting (or not) to climate change<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Results of a survey among nearly 5,000 corn farmers across 21 Midwestern watersheds suggest that they are relying primarily on new technologies, crop insurance, and in-field conservation practices to manage their risks from weather and climate. These findings were reported in a 2017 article in <em>Climate Risk Management<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Authors found the results consistent with general arguments that the U.S. crop insurance program may effectively subsidize inaction on the part of farmers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cU.S. farmers are not implementing longer-term modifications to farming that may be required depending on the severity of future climate change impacts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You can read the article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2212096316301097\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Digital dividends in global development?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cWorld Development Report 2016\u201d from the World Bank Group addresses that topic in a 369-page research document we have added to the ACDC collection.\u00a0 The analysis tracks rapid spread of digital technologies, globally, and examines the benefits from them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYet their aggregate impact has fallen short and is unevenly distributed. For digital technologies to benefit everyone everywhere requires closing the remaining digital divide, especially in internet access. But greater digital adoption will not be enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The report identifies challenges that countries face in strengthening what it calls the \u201canalog foundation\u201d of the digital revolution.<\/p>\n<p>You can review the report <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/publication\/wdr2016\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>&#8220;In Australia it&#8217;s not scarcity, it&#8217;s a drought!&#8221;<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Thanks to Australian rural communicator Neil Inall for his response to our recent ACDC News item describing the recent book, <em>The Communication Scarcity in Agriculture.<\/em>&#8221;\u00a0 Dr. Inall is known throughout Australia as a stimulating rural broadcaster (e.g., &#8220;Countrywide&#8221; on ABC Television) and respected consultant, commentator, and organization leader.<\/p>\n<p>You may recall that the book authors referred to &#8220;communication scarcity&#8221; in terms of what information gets shared (or doesn&#8217;t get shared) among key stakeholders in food and agriculture &#8212; consumers, policymakers, researchers, agribusiness, farmers, and others. That complex task challenges every community, region, and nation. It calls for skilled, wise communicators.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Wineries seeking \u201cgreen\u201d marketing benefits through new communications tools<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Results of recent research in Italy suggest that orientation to sustainability is \u201ctaking a central and crucial role in the operational and strategic choices of wineries.\u201d Marketing innovations and communications tools are playing a key role. Researchers surveyed 204 wineries in the Apulia region of southern Italy. They found positive correlation between a \u201cgreen\u201d orientation of the wineries and their use of innovative marketing tools such as QR codes, websites, newsletters, wine clubs, and training courses.<\/p>\n<p>Full text of this article, \u201cUnderstanding the relationship between green approach and marketing innovation tools in the wine sector,\u201d is available <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0959652616316249\">here<\/a>.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Livestock disease \u2013 a sensitive subject for producers<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Evidence of sensitivity was apparent in results of recent research involving a disease control program in the United Kingdom.
