It contributes <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">uniquely within the four-part \u201cFramework for Strategic Action\u201d of the University Library. <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span id=\"page1R_mcid8\" class=\"markedContent\"><\/span><span id=\"page1R_mcid8\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">It capitalizes on the University Library\u2019s national and international leadership by <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">expanding access to unique collections and resources, and by leveraging international <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">engagements to develop unique collections, services, and partnerships. <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page1R_mcid12\" class=\"markedContent\"><\/span><span id=\"page1R_mcid12\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u2022<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">It maximizes the use and impact of library services and collections through application of <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">emerging technologies, new service models, and changes in scholarly communications.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span id=\"page1R_mcid16\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">It enhances user success in information retrieval and use, including a variety of outreach, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">engagement, and marketing strategies. <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span id=\"page1R_mcid20\" class=\"markedContent\"><\/span><span id=\"page1R_mcid20\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">It strengthens the campus infrastructure to support scholarship and innovation through r<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">esources and services for the full life cycle of scholarly communications.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\"><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><span id=\"page1R_mcid23\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Overview <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page1R_mcid24\" class=\"markedContent\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span id=\"page1R_mcid24\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">During this reporting period (January 2020-June 2021), the ACDC began a shift from calendar <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">year reporting to fiscal year reporting and over the past eighteen months brought major changes <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">in staffing, operations, and outreach activities. In addition, the ACDC experienced adjustment <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">due to the COVID-19 pandemic which impacted staff work and development over the course of this time. Even so, staff members continued to provide excellent service and commitment to ACDC <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">users and the wider community.<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">The Center continued work on existing projects and evaluated <\/span><span id=\"page1R_mcid24\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">improved opportunities for collaboration and outreach.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><a name=\"admin\"><\/a>Administrative<\/h3>\n<h4><span id=\"page1R_mcid26\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Staffing and Operations <\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span id=\"page1R_mcid27\" class=\"markedContent\"><\/span><span id=\"page1R_mcid27\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Assistant Professor Janis Shearer served as head of ACDC during this administrative period, as <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">part of her faculty services within Funk ACES Library. <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page1R_mcid28\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Graduate students Courtney Smith and Emily Benton, alongside student assistant Kimberly <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Villanueva, graduated from the University in May 2020, and their appointments ended that <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">summer. The student assistant role was vacant during the 2020-2021 academic year. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"page1R_mcid29\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Eunchae Hong, graduate student in the Information Science Program, joined the staff in July 2020 <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">on a quarter-time basis. She completed her master\u2019s degree in May 2021 and continued with <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">ACDC during following months on a volunteer basis, working on the continued processing of the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Robert and Susanne Morris collection.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"page3R_mcid0\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Kevin Wiggins, graduate student in the Information Science Program, joined the staff during <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">August 2020 on a quarter-time basis. This appointment was in association with his graduate <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">studies, and it continued through May 2021. In June 2021, he began a half-time appointment. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"page3R_mcid1\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Volunteer associates continued to play an active role in the ongoing success of the Center. They <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">identified relevant literature from throughout the world, assisted in project development, offered counsel, and provided contacts. Associates during this period included Jim Evans, emeritus professor of agricultural communications, University of Illinois; Liz Harfull, associate for the Asia\/Pacific Region, based in South Australia; and Paul Hixson, emeritus chief information officer, University of Illinois. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"page3R_mcid2\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">During April 2020, staff members began to work off-site due to the COVID-19 pandemic and <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Funk ACES Library was closed, along with other libraries on campus. ACDC services continued, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">mainly via virtual platforms. Also, the staff prepared and distributed the 2019 ACDC Progress <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Report; revised the ACDC Libguide; developed and initiated use of a new ACDC Certificate of Appreciation; and updated the ACDC Manual and Website. Graduate Assistant Hong began to <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">process the recently contributed Robert and Susanne Morris Collection. It involves the 30-plus-<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">year history and teaching resources of the Management Training and Development Institute, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">based in Washington, D.C.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><a name=\"system\"><\/a>\u00a0System Development<\/h3>\n<p><span id=\"page3R_mcid4\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Staff members updated the curated services section of the ACDC website, adding and replacing <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">six links, as well as deleting five outdated links. The Information Technology manager for <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">infrastructure in the University of Illinois Library reported that the Bibleaves system used by ACDC <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">is running on an outdated version of software and will need a major ground-up rewrite soon. <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page3R_mcid5\" class=\"markedContent\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"page3R_mcid5\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Online metrics limitations persisted during this period. The ACDC staff continued to document need <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">and to request IT improvements that will provide detailed metrics involving information needs and <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">requests, searching patterns, and other online activities of those who visit the ACDC collection and <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">website.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\">Content, Programming, And Service<\/h3>\n<p><a name=\"con\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h4><span id=\"page5R_mcid1\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Document Collection <\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4><span id=\"page5R_mcid2\" class=\"markedContent\"><\/span><span id=\"page5R_mcid2\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Growth of the ACDC Collections: <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page5R_mcid3\" class=\"markedContent\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span id=\"page5R_mcid3\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">The ACDC collection consisted of 47,480 documents at the end of June 2021. About 960 <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">documents were added to the BibLeaves database during the period. Most of the collection\u00a0document types fell under online article, journal article, commentary or other. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-14966 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/funkaces\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2021\/11\/Screen-Shot-2021-11-12-at-3.12.57-PM-300x272.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"272\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/funkaces\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2021\/11\/Screen-Shot-2021-11-12-at-3.12.57-PM-300x272.png 300w, https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/funkaces\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2021\/11\/Screen-Shot-2021-11-12-at-3.12.57-PM.png 760w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4>Contributed Collections<\/h4>\n<p><a name=\"concol\"><\/a><br \/>\n<span id=\"page7R_mcid120\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Staff members continued to identify appropriate documents for the ACDC collection, using mainly <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">online search protocols, and preparing citations for deposit and publication in the Bibleaves <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">system. <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page7R_mcid121\" class=\"markedContent\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"page7R_mcid121\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Graduate assistant Hong devoted most of her effort during the period to processing the extensive <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Morris Collection \u2013 reviewing and selecting materials, rehousing items in acid-free folders and <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">boxes, and planning the finding aid to be developed. <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page7R_mcid122\" class=\"markedContent\"><br role=\"presentation\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"page7R_mcid122\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Staff members reviewed and considered offers from several retired or retiring professional <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">communicators and leaders, agricultural media organizations, and others who reported having <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">resource materials they would consider contributing to ACDC. <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page7R_mcid123\" class=\"markedContent\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"page7R_mcid123\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Associate Evans began to review an extensive historical collection involving project files that <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">feature dozens of international initiatives of the Office of Agricultural Communications, University <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">of Illinois College of Agriculture. They span a period from the late 1940s to mid-1990s. Citations <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">for selected materials were prepared in Bibleaves. <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page7R_mcid124\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Links to several communicator organization were added to the \u201cGateway to Useful Links\u201d section <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">of the ACDC website.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Opportunities for Collaboration<\/h4>\n<p><a name=\"opp\"><\/a><br \/>\n<span id=\"page9R_mcid1\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Head conferred with a selection of ACES faculty members about potentials for ACDC to engage <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">with, and serve, them and their programming interests. Examples include faculty members in the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communications (ALEC) Program of the College of ACES <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">and the statewide Illinois Extension Service. <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page9R_mcid2\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Staff members also discussed potential opportunities for such collaborations during their monthly <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">staff meetings.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a name=\"serving\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\">Serving Users<\/h3>\n<h4>ACDC Newsletter<\/h4>\n<p><span id=\"page9R_mcid6\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">This open-access online newsletter was prepared and distributed monthly during the period. <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Eighteen issues featured selected agricultural communications topics in journal articles, books, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">research reports, news media, commentaries, gatherings, and other settings. The account is used to <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">interact with the Funk ACES Library, industry professionals, and users of the Bibleaves citation <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">database. It is updated with current updates relevant to center events, local programming at the U<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">niversity of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and to advertise the publishing of the Center\u2019s newsletters. Twitter interaction was mainly with the Funk ACES Library account, and other <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">University accounts.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a name=\"outreach\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\">Outreach Activities<\/h3>\n<h4>Partnership with AgNIC:<\/h4>\n<p><span id=\"page11R_mcid4\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">The University of Illinois continued to serve as a national &#8220;Center of Excellence&#8221; in <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">agricultural communications as a partner in the Agriculture Network Information <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Collaborative (AgNIC) of the National Agricultural Library. ACDC serves as the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">portal for information about agricultural communications within this worldwide <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">online agricultural information system.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Partnership with IFAJ:<\/h4>\n<p><a name=\"IFAJ\"><\/a><br \/>\n<span id=\"page11R_mcid6\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">This professional organization serves some 5,000 members in 55 countries. A long-<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">time collaboration with ACDC continued during this period. <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page11R_mcid9\" class=\"markedContent\"><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li><span id=\"page11R_mcid9\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">The ACDC website continued to provide a special section for IFAJ members <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">as a way to acquaint them with ACDC resources and to offer information <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">services to them.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page11R_mcid13\" class=\"markedContent\"><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span id=\"page11R_mcid13\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Dozens of features that ACDC has created for IFAJ members through a <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">special project remained as resources for professional development on the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">IFAJ website. <\/span> <\/span><span id=\"page11R_mcid17\" class=\"markedContent\"><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span id=\"page11R_mcid17\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">During early 2019 the Queensland Rural Press Club (IFAJ affiliate) <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">inquired about the possibility of collaborating with ACDC. Through the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">arrangement, ACDC would host the mid-career recipient of an annual <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">professional development scholarship sponsored by the Rural Press Club. <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Conversations continued during 2020 and remained under consideration <\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">through the end of the period.<\/span> <\/span><span id=\"page11R_mcid21\" class=\"markedContent\"><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span id=\"page11R_mcid21\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">During August 2020, IFAJ President Owen Roberts confirmed interest in <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">looking for further opportunities to work together. One idea involves <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">collaborating to establish an agricultural journalism certificate program at <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the University of Illinois for IFAJ members and others.<\/span> <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Marketing Materials<\/h4>\n<p><a name=\"market\"><\/a><br \/>\n<span id=\"page11R_mcid26\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">At the beginning of the period, staff planned to begin the distribution of the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">marketing materials produced in 2019 by graduate student Benton and Associate <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Evans. However, in March of 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic forced staff to <\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">work remotely. The planned physical distribution of the 500 brochures was halted.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"page16R_mcid0\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">In response to COVID-19, staff members distributed the new ACDC brochure <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">electronically to an on-campus list of selected administrators and faculty\/staff <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">members throughout the University Library, College of ACES, College of Media, and University of Illinois Extension. They were encouraged to use and refer others <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">to the unique resources and information services in ACDC. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"page16R_mcid1\" class=\"markedContent\">In June 2021, ACDC became listed as a distinctive University Library Collection on the \u201cFeatured Collections &amp; Acquisitions\u201d webpage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"search\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Special Searches, Requests, Contacts<\/h4>\n<p><span id=\"page16R_mcid3\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">During this period ACDC responded to a wide range of requests involving <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">communications related broadly to food, farming\/ranching, natural resources, and <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">other aspects of agriculture. The poster titled, \u201cAgricultural Communication &amp; Climate: <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Understanding the ACDC\u2019s Users &amp; Collection\u201d informed researchers how the ACDC c<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">ollection can contribute to their work on the subject of climate change communication.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"page18R_mcid0\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">During November 2020, Head Shearer virtually attended the annual Illinois Extension <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Conference to maintain relationships with specialists and educators from all Illinois counties <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">and improve their awareness of the ACDC. <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page18R_mcid1\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Possibilities of producing a video to the ACDC Libguide came under consideration. It <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">would show and describe how to navigate the Bibleaves search system. Associate Evans served on the search committee for a senior faculty member in agricultural <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">communications within the new ALEC program of the College of ACES. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"page18R_mcid3\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Staff members served the Archives Task Force of the ACE organization by providing <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">details about issues of ACE-published periodicals held within the University of Illinois <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Library.
