The work and achievements of the first 25 years of the Mortenson Center are a legacy to C. Walter and Gerda B. Mortenson. During 2016, the Center will celebrate its 25th anniversary by holding events and activities locally and abroad that underscore its mission, along with a fundraising initiative. Activities will be announced at www.library.illinois.edu/mortenson and will culminate with a celebratory reception at the 2016 Mortenson Distinguished Lecture. Please make plans to attend!
The next 25 years present new opportunities to advance the Mortenson mission with its internationally-experienced staff, a commitment to the role of libraries in support of sustainable development, dialogue with partners to identify needs and appropriate solutions, and technologies to enhance access. The Center will continue to offer training programs in the United States and abroad, engage in partnerships to enhance library services and skills in other countries and regions, welcome international visitors engaged in library-related activities around the world, and offer its Mortenson Distinguished Lecture and other public forums to promote international understanding.
Future work will be informed by the United Nations Agenda 2030 and the role of libraries as enablers of sustainable development. The Center will enhance its mission to promote peace by advance the role of libraries in fostering peace. Lastly, to strengthen its work in developing library leaders and the impact of libraries internationally, the Center will initiate a new publication series to address policy issues in its mission area of libraries promoting international education, understanding, and peace.
The Mortenson Center has flourished due to the incredible support of University Library deans and colleagues who have provided not only encouragement, but their time and efforts to make the Center successful. It is also indebted to and thanks all others associated with the Center, and look to the continued support and participation of the library community and stakeholders as it forges ahead to the next 25 years.
