While it is almost impossible to completely arrest deterioration, the most cost-effective preservation option for any institution is to properly maintain its collections. Proper collection management and care seeks to prevent more costly damage while encouraging free and open access to the Library's materials.
Preventative preservation activities at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign's Library consist of marking, deacidification, environmental monitoring, disaster preparedness and recovery planning, pest management, staff and user education, and working with facilities maintenance and security.
