Mission: To treat the collection's circulating materials in a timely fashion while disseminating the principles of preservation and sound conservation methods to library staff and users.
Binding pamphlets became a separate operation in 1989 (see 'history' below). In the first few years of its existence, an average of 8,000 to 10,000 pamphlets were bound per year. These numbers, reflect, in part, a specially funded project through the College of Agriculture. In the FY 00/01, due to another special project, slightly more than 12,000 pamphlets were bound. Typically, however, we bind an average of 5,000 pamphlets per year. From 1990 through April, 2003, we have bound a total of 112,000 pamphlets.
Since 1989, we have changed our methods of binding pamphlets in several noteworthy ways.
Book RepairWe perform a wide variety of treatments on circulating materials, including:

The distinct "Pamphlet Binding and Book Repair" section was created in 1989, under the direction of William Henderson (Preservation Librarian from 1986 to 1996) and Norma Linton. It was charged with developing the operation with student-staff and with an emphasis on fast turn around time.
By 1996, preventive preservation education was made an integral part of the work and mission of this section. Mending and box making workshops were provided for library staff. The workshop "Practicing Preventive Preservation" was given throughout the library and in classes of the Graduate School of Library and Information Science (GSLIS). In this same year, the Volunteer Program, which provides conservation/preservation training for GSLIS students was established. Such volunteer students have contributed many hours of service to preserving the Library's collection and a few of them have developed careers in the field of preservation.
Another educational endeavor originating from Pamphlet Binding & Book Repair, in 1997, was the first preservation website to be created for the University of Illinois Library. It illustrates many of the procedures performed by this section with over 400 color photos. It has been used by preservationists throughout the country for their workshops and staff training. The information thereon may be accessed through the above link.
