In the fall of 2002, Tom Teper teamed up with Robb Springfield, a member of School of Art and Design’s faculty, to develop a class project geared toward developing preservation graphics aimed at user education. Using members of two senior level graphics design students, the project aimed to develop posters, bookmarks, and other typical preservation and conservation outreach items.
Over the course of two months, the Head of Preservation met with the classes on several occasions to give the students some background about preservation and conservation concerns in libraries. Robb Springfield then worked with the classes to distill the information and develop a better understanding of how our needs could transform into a graphical form. The students were then turned loose. The results included posters, bookmarks, development flyers, web pages, screensavers, and other designs intended to reach our institution’s users. Following a presentation by the students and an evaluation by members of the Library’s faculty and staff, a number of posters and other graphics projects were chosen for further development.
A selection of the submissions are included below.
The logo shown below was developed by student Ian Law for the Preservation and Conservation Program to use for future graphic projects.
Created by student Jenna Black, the following two posters are from a set of seven aimed at undergraduate students. The posters are a reminder to treat the library's materials carefully.
