\nexpanded version of Gunnar Fant’s definitive 1960 text,
\nThe Acoustic Theory of Speech Production<\/em>.\u00a0Ken continued working on the book during
\nthe entire period of my doctoral and post-doctoral studies.\u00a0During this time, light banter
\nabout the progress of his book was a continuous source of amusement and inspiration for his
\nstudents and colleagues.\u00a0We could all see, clearly, that he refused to publish the book until
\neverything in it was correct; we could also see that, in so doing, he was postponing its
\npublication to the point of absurdity.\u00a0The book was finally published in 1999, the year that I
\ncame to Urbana as an Assistant Professor.\u00a0The most highly reputed phoneticians in the world

\nlike in humans).\u00a0The evolutionary process in these kinds of organisms is complicated because
\nit involves the interaction of genetics, natural selection, and population demography.\u00a0This
\ntheory has profound implications for many of the most fundamental problems in evolutionary
\nbiology:\u00a0 life-history evolution, the evolution of senescence (aging), kin selection, sexual
\nselection, and the evolution of mating systems.<\/p>\n
