{"id":933,"date":"2019-08-12T14:59:54","date_gmt":"2019-08-12T14:59:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/borrowing\/?page_id=933"},"modified":"2025-09-16T19:25:54","modified_gmt":"2025-09-16T19:25:54","slug":"library-cards","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/borrowing\/library-cards\/","title":{"rendered":"Library Cards"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>What to Use as Your Library Card<\/h2>\n<p>To obtain circulation services at the Library you\u2019ll need a current, valid ID card.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>ID cards must be presented by the person to whom the card was issued.<\/li>\n<li>Cards may only be used for transactions of the cardholder (unless the cardholder is a proxy for another patron).<\/li>\n<li>ID\u2019s not mentioned below, such as drivers\u2019 licenses or passports, are not valid library ID cards.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>U of I Library Cards<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Students, faculty, and staff use their i-card<\/li>\n<li>University Laboratory High School ID card<\/li>\n<li>U of I Urbana campus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.library.illinois.edu\/borrowing\/courtesy-cards\/\">Courtesy Card<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>I-Share Patrons<\/h3>\n<p>ID card from your I-Share member library<\/p>\n<h3>Reciprocal Borrowing<\/h3>\n<p>A guide for students and faculty about <a href=\"https:\/\/guides.library.illinois.edu\/reciprocalborrowing\">reciprocal borrowing programs<\/a>, such as the Big Ten Academic Alliance.<\/p>\n<h3>Unaffiliated Users<\/h3>\n<p>Community users, and others, may be eligible to apply for a U of I Urbana campus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.library.illinois.edu\/borrowing\/courtesy-cards\/\">Courtesy Card<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Library Account Number<\/h2>\n<h3>When do I use my Library Account Number?<\/h3>\n<p>To set up your library account.<br \/>\nWhenever you\u2019re asked for your library account number, Borrower ID, or 14-digit library number.<\/p>\n<h3>Where can I Find it?<\/h3>\n<h4>U of I Patrons<\/h4>\n<p>Students, staff, and faculty \u2013 the number is printed on your i-card after the word Library. It is not your UIN, and your library account is not connected to any other university account or record.<br \/>\nCourtesy card holders \u2013 the number is printed beneath the barcode on your courtesy card.<\/p>\n<h4>I-Share Patrons<\/h4>\n<p>Your library account number is assigned by your institution and usually appears on your university ID card.<\/p>\n<h2>Social Security Numbers<\/h2>\n<p>In compliance with campus directives on the privacy of the social security numbers (SSNs) of faculty, staff, and students, the library is no longer using social security numbers. Library users\u2019 SSNs will not be entered into the library\u2019s integrated library system, and library staff will use other search options, such as the Library Account Number or University ID Number (UIN), to identify a borrower\u2019s record.<\/p>\n<p>Library users should never be asked to provide their SSN in order to receive any library service.<\/p>\n<h2>Alternative Library Card Options<\/h2>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.library.illinois.edu\/borrowing\/courtesy-cards\/\">Courtesy Cards<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>Visitors, affiliates, community users, and others, may be eligible to apply for a U of I Urbana campus courtesy card, which will let you borrow books from the Library.<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.library.illinois.edu\/borrowing\/proxy\/\">Proxy Authorization<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>University of Illinois faculty members, graduate students, and other library borrowers with extenuating circumstances may authorize another library borrower to check out library materials for them.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What to Use as Your Library Card To obtain circulation services at the Library you\u2019ll need a current, valid ID card.
