Graduate students may apply and receive an appointment to a monthly-paid <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"http:\/\/humanresources.illinois.edu\/employees\/current-employees\/graduate-employees\/graduate-assistant\/index.html\">graduate assistantship<\/a><\/span>. The appointments range from 25% (10 hrs\/wk) to 50% (20 hrs\/wk) full time equivalent time. Students must be appointed between 25% and 67% for 91 or more continuous days in order to qualify for a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.grad.illinois.edu\/gradhandbook\">tuition waiver<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The following information covers information for Graduate Assistants from requesting funding to transitioning to another position after their assistantship.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/bhrsc\/human-resources\/recruiting-hiring-and-onboarding\/recruiting\/recruitment-process-for-graduate-assistants\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Graduate Assistantship Allocation &#8211; Request Process<\/span><\/a>\n<ul>\n<li>Reminder: second year positions must be requested and approved along with all other positions during the call in late fall.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/bhrsc\/human-resources\/job-performance-fundamentals\/graduate-assistantship-policy-number-of-assistantships-per-information-sciences-mslis-student\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Graduate Assistantship Policy &#8211; Number of Assistantships Per Information Sciences MSLIS Student<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Create\/update the Graduate Assistant&#8217;s position description &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/bhrsc\/human-resources\/recruiting-hiring-and-onboarding\/recruiting\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">template<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li>If you would like the position posted, email it to the Library Human Resources Graduate Assistantship Coordinator (information below)<\/li>\n<li>Review graduate assistant applications received from the posting or from the <a href=\"https:\/\/quest.library.illinois.edu\/GAapplicants_search\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Graduate Assistant Query Form<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Review resources related to interview questions and <a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/bhrsc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/88\/2022\/10\/Avoiding-Inappropriate-Interview-Questions.pdf\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">limiting bias in interview searches<\/span> <\/a><\/li>\n<li>Complete a verbal offer to the candidate of choice (position, percentage, and the current GA rate for the academic year)<\/li>\n<li>Complete the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/forms.illinois.edu\/sec\/5622114?referrer=https:\/\/shibboleth.illinois.edu\/\">Graduate Assistant Request Letter Form<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li>After the employee has signed the contract and before the end of the first week of employment, the GA and the supervisor need to sign a copy of the position description and submit it to the Library Graduate Assistant Coordinator.<\/li>\n<li>Prepare\/update onboarding materials<\/li>\n<li>Need to track # of hours worked by graduate assistant and sick time used<\/li>\n<li>Reminder that GAs receiving breaks during their work day\n<ul>\n<li>GAs are exempt, there is no legal requirement to provide a break. However, supervisors are encouraged to be mindful that short breaks can help employees better focus, support their health and wellbeing, and improve their workplace satisfaction. With that being said, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.minimum-wage.org\/illinois\/required-breaks-and-meal-periods\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Illinois State Law<\/span><\/a> states that an employee is to receive a minimum of 20 minutes after 5 hours of work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/bhrsc\/human-resources\/job-performance-fundamentals\/overview-of-the-annual-performance-evaluation-process\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Performance Evaluations<\/span><\/a>: &#8220;Supervisors will provide P\/GAs at least one performance evaluation during academic year or term of appointment.&#8221; \u00a0It doesn&#8217;t require that it be formal\/written, but if it is, there are procedural steps to be taken.<\/li>\n<li>Exit Interviews: \u00a0&#8220;Exit interviews are not required to be completed for P\/GAs, but the process is a way for the unit to learn important information about their P\/GA program.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/bhrsc\/human-resources\/leaving-the-library\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">End of contract<\/span><\/a>\n<ul>\n<li>Ending contract due to performance &#8211; need to follow the union process outlined in the GEO Union Contract<\/li>\n<li>Need an Exit checklist when the GA is no longer going to be returning to the library as an employee.<\/li>\n<li>If GA leaves before the end of their contract, they need to submit a letter of resignation and complete the exit checklist<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Transition between assistantship years &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/bhrsc\/human-resources\/recruiting-hiring-and-onboarding\/recruiting\/recruiting-for-graduate-hourly-student-positions\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Grad Hourly<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li>After graduation the employee can switch to an <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/bhrsc\/human-resources\/recruiting-hiring-and-onboarding\/recruiting\/recruiting-for-academic-hourly-extra-help-positions\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Extra Help or Academic Hourly<\/span><\/a> position<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you have any questions about Graduate Assistantships, please contact the Library Human Resources Graduate Assistantship Coordinator (currently Aneitre Johnson <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span id=\"personemail\"><a href=\"mailto:atjohnsn@illinois.edu\">atjohnsn@illinois.edu<\/a><\/span><\/span>).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The University Library employs approximately 85 graduate assistants during the academic year typically from the University\u2019s School of Information Sciences.
