Major Image Databases

  • ARTstor A digital library of images with associated information and software tools designed to enhance teaching, learning, and scholarship. Video tutorials and training manuals are made available through ARTstor’s online help guide.
  • CLAROS Built on the art of ancient Greece and Rome, CLAROS is an international research collaboration, using the latest Information and Communication Technologies to enable simultaneous searching of major collections in university research institutes and museums.
  • Saskia Digital Images The collection contains 30,000 digital images of paintings, sculpture, and architecture, including images from many important collections including the Prado, the Kunsthistorisches Museum, the Uffizi, and the Louvre as well as archaeological sites in Greece, Italy, Turkey, and Egypt.

Tutorials and News about Image Collections

  • “Finding Images on the Web” Tutorial  Comprehensive tutorial designed and maintained by Boston University Libraries.  Offers good information on how and where to search for images.  Includes links to major image databases and copyright information.  A good resource for the novice and experienced users.
  • Finding and Using Images Library Guide Guide that is intended to help users find images online. Introduction to databases and websites available through UIUC.
  • Pixels: Digital Visual Resources and Tech Tips This blog run by the University Library and the College of Fine and Applied Arts brings news, tips, and announcements about digital image projects at the University. Great place to start if you are curious about what the University is doing in this area.

Architecture

  • archINFORM Focusing primarily on twentieth-century architecture, this database includes information one over 14,000 built and unrealized projects from various international architects and planners
  • Cities/Buildings Database From the University of Washington, “a collection of digitized images of buildings and cities drawn from across time and throughout the world, available to students, researchers and educators on the web.”

Art History

  • Agence Photographique Database of over 440,000 works of art from the national and regional museums of France. This site is available in French and English.
  • Art & Architecture A searchable collection of images from the Conway Library of the Courtauld Institute of Art.
  • Art Images for College Teaching Focusing primarily on ancient, medieval, and Renaissance European art arranged in chronological sequence, from original photographs.
  • Art Resource The worlds largest fine art stock photo archive.
  • Artcyclopedia “The Fine Art Search Engine” An extensive index of online images of fine art, primarily from museums and galleries.
  • Bildindex der Kunst und Architektur des Bildarchivs Foto Marburg Database of images available from the Bildarchiv Photo Marburg, primarily in black and white. Classified iconographically according to the Iconclass system.
  • Index of Christian Art A photographic and bibliographic archive of Medieval Christian art, with an increasing amount of images available online.
