In 1917, the American Library Association provided library services to wounded soldiers and delivered books, newspapers, and magazines to more than <a href=\"https:\/\/archives.library.illinois.edu\/alaarchon\/index.php?p=collections\/controlcard&amp;id=7750\">200 army and navy hospitals.<\/a>\u00a0 The ALA was able to send trained librarians to 75 military hospitals to aid in the outreach.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4960\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4960\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/ala\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2017\/05\/MW2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4960 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/ala\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2017\/05\/MW2-300x279.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"279\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/ala\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2017\/05\/MW2-300x279.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/ala\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2017\/05\/MW2.jpg 492w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4960\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Found in Record Series 89\/1\/13<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">The ALA worked diligently to advertise their services and ask the nation for donations of reading material through various promotional efforts such as printed postcards.\u00a0 The reading material that was provided to patients increased morale throughout the hospital.\u00a0 In one instance it was quoted that \u201cone serious surgical case smiled for the first time when he was given the Herald, of Huntington, West Virginia.\u00a0 He said it was the only thing he wanted and nobody could get it in New York.\u00a0 From the hour it was put in his hand, he had more faith in the whole world.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4959\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4959\" style=\"width: 264px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/ala\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2017\/05\/MW1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4959\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/ala\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2017\/05\/MW1-264x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"264\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/ala\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2017\/05\/MW1-264x300.jpg 264w, https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/ala\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2017\/05\/MW1.jpg 478w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 264px) 100vw, 264px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4959\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Found in Record Series 89\/1\/13, Box 1<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The libraries began by collecting fiction books from the New York Public Library and the ALA soon added over five hundred titles of poetry, history, travel, reference, and school text books.\u00a0 As time went on, the libraries began collecting technical books for the soldiers that wished to expand their knowledge within different fields.\u00a0 Stated in the <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=9vU1AQAAMAAJ&amp;pg=RA3-PA36&amp;lpg=RA3-PA36&amp;dq=ala+military+hospital+library+service&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=vj3G5ckqYc&amp;sig=iZ7xOhieAn-rvDI65apOawT_vb8&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=0ahUKEwiwvsGE-o3TAhVhxoMKHfzkAfsQ6AEITjAJ%20-%20v=onepage&amp;q=ala%20military%20hospital%20library%20service&amp;f=false#v=snippet&amp;q=ala%20military%20hospital%20library%20service&amp;f=false\">Hospital Management<\/a>, Volumes 7-10, \u201ca telephone message to a well-known firm brought, by special messenger, material that made the soldier say: &#8216;I\u2019ll be a better miner staying in bed than if I was working,&#8217; and he was thoroughly content.\u201d Technical books allowed the patients the ability to find hope and see the different opportunities available to them outside of fighting in the war.<\/p>\n<p>The job of the hospital librarian was so much more than bringing reading materials to soldiers.\u00a0 It was about increasing morale during one of the darkest times in history and bringing hope to so many that felt disheartened. The librarians in hospitals made it their duty to serve the wounded soldiers and provide them with the reading materials they wished for in a timely manner.\u00a0 One librarian working at the hospital library in Quantico, VA was persistent when asking for reading materials for one man in particular.\u00a0 A book on photography was requested and along with the request, a note from the librarian to \u201cplease rush.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After World War I, the hospital library service was taken over by the US army, which recognized the importance of the work provided by the ALA and the librarians.
