Resources for People of All Abilities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Libraries around the world have progressively become more aware of the services they provide for users with disabilities. According to the ALA, they \u201crecognize that people with disabilities are a large and neglected minority in the community and are severely underrepresented in the library profession.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>After processing various publications done by the ALA\u00a0 from the record series <a href=\"http:\/\/archives.library.illinois.edu\/alaarchon\/index.php?p=collections\/controlcard&amp;id=7309\">13\/10\/7<\/a>, I came across a title that caught my attention.\u00a0 \u201cBooks for Tired Eyes\u201d\u00a0 it read in big letters.\u00a0 Interested as to what this book was about, I started flipping through the pages only to find well known book titles listed throughout.\u00a0 As I continued being curious, I saw examples of different sizes of fonts.\u00a0 Finally, after an \u201cah-ha\u201d moment, I realized that this book was a list of titles that were published in larger fonts for users that have visual impairments.\u00a0The book was compiled by Charlotte Matson in 1931 and includes a list of books in 24 and 36 print type in categories such as\u00a0adult fiction, adult nonfiction, and children\u2019s books.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2814\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2814\" style=\"width: 186px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/ala\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2016\/04\/BFTE.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2814\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/ala\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2016\/04\/BFTE-213x300.png\" alt=\"BFTE\" width=\"186\" height=\"262\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/ala\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2016\/04\/BFTE-213x300.png 213w, https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/ala\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2016\/04\/BFTE.png 493w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 186px) 100vw, 186px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2814\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image of book cover from HathiTrust.com<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cBooks for Tired Eyes\u201d isn\u2019t the only thing that the ALA and libraries are doing in order to serve patrons with disabilities. The ALA created the \u201cALA Library Services for People with Disabilities Policy\u201d that pushes libraries to meet the needs of all people.\u00a0 ALA accredited Library and Information Schools educate students and staff on persons with disabilities through classes as well as presentations.\u00a0 For example, in 2015, the University of Illinois had Dr. Irmgarda Kasinskaite-Buddeberg presented information on the right to accessible information for persons with disabilities.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2813\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2813\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/ala\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2016\/04\/Film-e1461945672566.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2813 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/archives.library.illinois.edu\/ala\/files\/2016\/04\/Film-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"Film\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2813\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">An ALA Films film reel titled, &#8220;Print for the Visually Handicapped&#8221;. Record Series 18\/1\/13.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Accessibility is one of the most important aspects in both libraries and archives. It is important to remember that not all users are the same.\u00a0 The ALA has done, and is continuing to, remove physical and technical barriers to accessing library resources.\u00a0 What started as a book compiled of a list of titles in large fonts for the visually impaired in 1940, has turned in to screen readers to use in a library and other resources that accommodate people\u00a0with disabilities.\u00a0 Thanks to the help and encouragement of the ALA, libraries are implementing new software, materials, and technologies to promote equal access for all users.<\/p>\n<p>For more information on the American Library Association\u2019s policies regarding libraries or services for people with disabilities, please refer to their website <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/\">www.ala.org<\/a>.\u00a0 The ALA Archives also contain information on policies, events, and publications that refer to disabilities and their policies at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.archives.library.illinois.edu\/ala\">www.archives.library.illinois.edu\/ala<\/a>.
