W. Faxon\" href=\"http:\/\/archives.library.illinois.edu\/ala\/fwfaxon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">blog post<\/a>: Frederick\u00a0Winthrop Faxon (1866-1936) was the early bard of the American Library Association.\u00a0 Although he was not a librarian, he was memorialized as someone who &#8220;for almost forty years,[&#8230;] devoted himself to serving librarians and promoting the library idea.\u201d<a href=\"http:\/\/wp.me\/p4AteR-v1#note01\">[1]<\/a> Attending 43 annual conferences throughout his lifetime, Faxon&#8217;s <a title=\"Sample Faxon Report\" href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/stream\/jstor-25685352\/25685352#page\/n1\/mode\/2up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">humorous reports<\/a> enliven several years of the American Library Association Papers and Proceedings.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In the Conference Photographs, 1876-1976 <a title=\"RS 99\/1\/14\" href=\"http:\/\/archives.library.illinois.edu\/alaarchon\/index.php?p=collections\/controlcard&amp;id=7824&amp;q=99%2F1%2F14\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Record Series 99\/1\/14<\/a>, the ALA Archives has several of his traveling conference photo albums.\u00a0 An avid photographer, Faxon documented the entire conference, from austere portraits of ALA Presidents to informal swimming excursions.\u00a0 After the conference, he annotated and bound the photographs into pocket-sized volumes and circulated them amongst his friends.\u00a0 Similar to a chain letter, the recipient was encouraged to forward it to the next person on the list after 24 hours.\u00a0 Among the intended recipients included Melvil Dewey, <a title=\"Best Man in America is a Woman: Katherine L. Sharp\" href=\"http:\/\/archives.library.illinois.edu\/ala\/best-man-america-woman-katharine-l-sharp-foundation-american-librarianship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Katherine L. Sharp<\/a>, <a title=\"Miss Public Libraries: Mary Ahern\" href=\"http:\/\/archives.library.illinois.edu\/ala\/miss-public-libraries-mary-eileen-ahern\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mary Ahern<\/a>, John Cotton Dana, Mary Wright Plummer, C. A. Cutter, and Herbert Putnam.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2015\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2015\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/ala\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2015\/03\/image7.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2015 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/ala\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2015\/03\/image7.jpeg\" alt=\"Faxon3\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2015\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;The sun is rather bright and warm, but we suffer in a good cause &#8211; for a frontspiece to the Library Journal.
