The book tells the story of the revival of mass-organized library services for the armed forces, which had been <a title=\"\u201cGive the Next Man a Chance!\u201d The Circulating Books of World War I\" href=\"http:\/\/archives.library.illinois.edu\/ala\/give-next-man-chance-circulating-books-world-war\/\">premiered during World War I<\/a> but fallen into neglect during peacetime. The Victory Book Campaign was a joint effort from librarians, booksellers, publishers, and the US armed forces to not just rekindle the library program, but to greatly expand it. Librarians focused their efforts on organizing book donation drives, as demonstrated with this poster to the right.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Manning used the papers of <a href=\"http:\/\/archives.library.illinois.edu\/alaarchon\/index.php?p=collections\/controlcard&amp;id=7446\">Althea B. Warren<\/a>, ALA President 1943-44,\u00a0when researching this book.
