{"id":351,"date":"2013-04-09T19:14:58","date_gmt":"2013-04-09T19:14:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/afx\/?p=351"},"modified":"2016-12-19T21:09:42","modified_gmt":"2016-12-19T21:09:42","slug":"researching-hip-hop-culture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.library.illinois.edu\/afx\/2013\/04\/09\/researching-hip-hop-culture\/","title":{"rendered":"Researching Hip Hop Culture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Graham Bryant &#8217;13<\/em><\/p>\n<p>(Source: William &amp; Mary <em>News &amp; Events<\/em>, April 5, 2013)<\/p>\n<p>Antiquated manuscripts, rare books and memorabilia from the William &amp; Mary\u2019s storied history are all among the items one would expect to find when searching through Swem Library\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/libraries.wm.edu\/research\/special-collections\" target=\"_blank\">Special Collections<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Among the letters, artifacts and other scholarly records from ages past, researchers will soon be able to discover such artifacts as SMILES Crew&#8217;s first boombox or a cassette tape of Mighty MCs recordings.<\/p>\n<p>On April 19, Special Collections will launch the <a href=\"https:\/\/libraries.wm.edu\/research\/special-collections\/manuscripts\/wm-hip-hop-collection\" target=\"_blank\">William &amp; Mary Hip-Hop Collection<\/a>, the most comprehensive collection of its kind devoted to chronicling Virginia\u2019s hip-hop past from the 1980s to the present through oral histories, recordings, publications and other ephemera created by Virginia-based artists, collectives and businesses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe, as an institution, have been collecting music for a century. What prompted the vision of starting a hip-hop collection is the need to look at the space we are at in the history of hip-hop,\u201d said Amy Schindler, university archivist and Acting Marian and Alan McLeod Director of the Special Collections Research Center.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHip-hop has been around since the 1970s, and we\u2019re in a space now where some of the early people are no longer with us.
