Another year

UGL commits to making the 2007-2008 school year one that will continue our tradition of exemplary service to our patrons and to communicating with YOU…the faculty and staff that make up this great institution known as the University of Illinois Library!

We hope this newsletter continues to serve as a resource to all of you in the Library as a source of information and guide to the services and “happenings” of the Undergraduate Library. We want to ensure that our continual changes, innovations, and policies are communicated throughout the library.

New (and Longer) Hours

We heard the students. With the support of the Provost, a portion of the student fee is funding modified 24 hour service. The Undergraduate Library, with 100 % of its services and spaces, will be open from 8am-3am. The Undergrad Lobby (Espresso Royale area and upper and lower entrance areas) will be open as a sudy hall from 3am-8am Monday through Friday morning.

In addition, UGL will open at 10am on both Saturday and Sunday, and close at 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays. For more detailed information on these hours please see the University Library Hours.

E-Reserve Tips!

Once again we are busy processing e-reserves for the new semester. Instructors wishing to submit electronic reserve items should know the following:

Material is processed in a first-in first-out manne so faculty should submit e-reserve requests as early as possible. We typically receive the majority of requests around the beginning of the semester, which creates a massive backlog, so we greatly appreciate early submissions.
Requests must be submitted with complete citations for all readings. Either use our request form available online, or submit a syllabus that contains all pertinent citation information (MLA or APA format preferred).
All readings are taken down at the end of each semester in compliance with copyright restrictions. A request is required each semester for which the materials should be relinked. An email reminder is sent to faculty about this during the last six weeks of each semester.

When, How, What? - Media Policies

General Media Collection:

Items from our movie collection circulate for ONE WEEK to all patron types
Faculty and graduate students may make advance reservations for movies
Faculty and graduate students are not limited in the number of items they can check out
Undergraduates may check out up to 5 items at a time
Late fees are $1 per day per item
All movies must be returned in person to the Undergraduate Library Information Services desk.

Media on Reserve:

Movies on reserve may circulate to students and most other patrons for building-use only.
Reservations to watch movies on reserve can be made in advance by contacting the Undergraduate Library Information Services desk (333-3477)
Faculty and Graduate Instructors may check out movies that are on reserve for a one day loan for instructional use only. Longer loan periods must be approved by a UGL Librarian.
Personal copies of movies on reserve may only be checked out by the owning patron.

Placing Media on Reserve

Faculty/instructors may place any movies held in the UGL collection on reserve for a particular class for an entire semester
More than one course may place any particular movie on reserve
Students are expected to view movies that are on reserve in UGL
Instructors may check out reserve items for one day check out
A Reserve Request Form must be filled out for all movies that are to be placed on reserve for any particular course

Collaboration Rooms? We Have Them!

Seven group collaboration rooms accommodating up to 8 people are now available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Located on the upper level, the rooms provide a table, chairs and a whiteboard. One room includes a large flat screen monitor, which will allow students to connect laptops. Whiteboard markers can be checked out from the Information Services Desk. These rooms have been created in an effort to accommodate the collaborative learning in all areas in which students engage.
