A Newsletter for Library Personnel

We're Watching the Sun Rise!

We're 24/5! Based on the success of the extended hours, and with continued support from the Provost and the Library/IT fee monies, the UGL is providing 24 hour service, Sunday at 10am through Friday at 10pm. UGL's hours will remain the same on Saturday (open 10 am-10 pm). With more hours come more staff. Between 4pm and 12am you can welcome Stefanie Postula and between 1am and 9am you can welcome Paula Adams. We literally couldn't do it without them!

Text Messaging Pilot Program

Students now have another option available to help them remember to do their research. The Undergraduate Library is offering a text messaging service that will reminds students that Librarian’s Office Hours are happening that day. The alert will go out the morning Office Hours are happening (Mondays and Tuesdays) to remind the students of the place and time.   This is a pilot service so participation is limited to the first 200 subscribers.

UGL Instruction Services

The Undergraduate Library continues to offer valuable instructional services for students and faculty/instructors.  Library instruction is provided for first-year students in their Composition I classes to facilitate their development of competent research skills.  Last year, of the approximately 5,000 students taking Composition I, over half participated in one of these instructional sessions.

Additionally, any student can receive one-on-one research assistance by taking advantage of Librarian’s Office Hours (held Monday afternoons and Tuesday evenings this Spring).  The office hour format is appealing to busy students who require more flexibility and individualization than a topical workshop can provide.

Through its focus on information literacy (the founding principle of all library instruction efforts), the Undergraduate Library is helping prepare students for academic excellence and lifelong learning.  For more information, please direct questions to Susan Avery, Instructional Services Librarian at the Undergraduate Library.

Frontline Faces: Student Assistants

The undergraduate students who work at the library are an integral part of our operations and we couldn’t manage without them.  At the Undergraduate Library (UGL) we employ more than 40 students to work both with circulation and collection maintenance, and with information processing management.  In this issue of The Undergrad Edge we profile three of the hardworking student assistants who work at the circulation desk and with collection maintenance.  These students are the first faces you see when entering the UGL so we rely on them to provide excellent customer service and have an understanding of how the library system works.  Thanks to them we can now keep the library open 24/5 making us accessible to our patrons 144 hours a week!
