Metadata

After evalauating several metadata schema commonly employed for image description, we decided to use the VRA Core Categories for item-level description. VRA Core is designed to facilitate the sharing of information among visual resource collections about both the original works and the images that represent them.
Metadata Resources
Metadata is an increasingly challenging area of work and study for librarians today, particularly as many print and image collections undergo digital reformatting and the digital images require proper cataloging. Much research on metadata is taking place at the University of Illinois. The work being done on the Open Archives Initiative (OAI) is an example and is highlighted on this project site. In addition, students and faculty in the Information Science Research Laboratory at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science (GSLIS) meet bi-weekly for a Metadata Roundtable, at which presentations concerning approaches to metadata are given and then discussed.

Below are just a few of the metadata resources in both print form and on the World Wide Web that we consulted (and continue to consult) for this project.
