2006 FISHER FORUM

Book Arts, Culture and Media in Russia, Eastern Europe and Eurasia:
From Print to Digital

June 17-18, 2006

Conference Goals • Steering Committee • Call for Papers

Conference Goals: The 2006 Forum (and pre-conference events) will celebrate the achievements of book arts, culture and the media in Russia, East Europe and Eurasia, and discuss political challenges. It will also probe access mechanisms and research approaches facilitated by technology. International experts will join younger practitioners in providing a comprehensive overview of the field. Members of the steering committee include:

Steering Committee:
Mikhail Afanas’ev (Director, Historical Library, Moscow)
David J. Birnbaum (Professor & Chair, Dept. of Slavic Langs. & Lits., U. Pittsburgh)
Melissa Frazier (Associate Professor, Russian, Sarah Lawrence College)
John Randolph (Assistant Professor, History, UIUC)
Miranda Remnek (Head, Slavic & East European Library, UIUC) [Chair]
Juergen Warmbrunn (Director, Herder Inst. Library, Marburg)
Janet Zmroczek (Director of European Collections, British Library, London)

Call for Papers: Papers have been invited on traditional approaches to the study of manuscript/print culture in Russia, Eastern Europe and Eurasia, including studies of publishing, libraries, and bibliography. We have also sought papers on digital applications: new technology, software; emerging research approaches; expanding digital initiatives and partnerships (especially projects that seek to apply technology to the study of manuscript/print culture). The full program is now available, though it may still be possible to include a couple of late submissions. If interested, send paper title, brief abstract (100 words), and short CV to the international steering group c/o Miranda Remnek, Slavic Library (mremnek@uiuc.edu).

REGISTRATION INFORMATION

REGISTRATION

The Fisher Forum (June 17-18) is being held in conjunction with three other events: the Slavic Digital Text Workshop (June 15), the Slavic Librarians' Workshop (June 15), and the Reading Culture seminar (June 16).

1. If you plan to attend the Forum, you should submit the FISHER FORUM REGISTRATION FORM. Please fill in and send as an e-mail attachment to Lynda Park, Assistant Director, UIUC Russian, East European & Eurasian Center at lypark@uiuc.edu or fax to (217) 333-1582.

2. If you plan to attend any of the three associated events (workshops or seminar), you should merely notify Miranda Remnek mremnek@uiuc.edu

3. You do not need to register for the UIUC Summer Research Lab for any of these events unless you plan to conduct several days research using the Library, or seek a housing grant.

FEES
No registration fee will be charged for the Forum or pre-conference events, except for the Digital Text Workshop ($25, payable on arrival).

TRAVEL

Except for invited speakers (and a small number of younger colleagues on stipends), travel will be at the expense of participants.

UIUC is located about 140 miles south of Chicago. For those unfamiliar with Urbana-Champaign, please note that our small airport is close to the cities (about 3 miles). Taxi service is available. Several airlines serve Champaign-Urbana (CMI): American (though Chicago O'Hare), Delta (through Cincinnati) and Northwest (through Detroit). American (jet service) from O'Hare takes about 30 mins; Northwest (propeller service) from Detroit, over an hour.

HOUSING

Again, except for invited speakers (and a small number of younger colleagues on stipends), housing will be at the expense of participants. The conference hotel is the Hampton Inn north of campus, about 7 blocks from the Illini Union (conference location, at the north end of the Quad). Conference rate is $79. Attendees are responsible for making reservations. Please call (217) 337-1100 or 1-800-HAMPTON (426 7866). Please quote the conference code, Group Code FFM.

A second option is the Illini Union itself at $86 a night (217 333-1241). If you use this option, please make your own reservations.

Less expensive options: Researchers who intend to stay for several days to take part in UIUC’s Summer Research Laboratory on Russia, Eastern Europe & Eurasia (http://www.reec.uiuc.edu/srl/srl.html) will be eligible for cheap housing at $46 a night at the Illini Tower on campus (near the Library at the south end of the Quad). This rate is for a private room in a shared suite. *The Russian Center will make this reservation*. Researchers may also be eligible for free housing. Applications will need to include (1) a plan for a longer research stay, and (2) a policy-relevant research proposal. Such proposals may qualify for up to 8 days (14 for graduate students) free lodging in a newly-refurbished dormitory.

Other inexpensive housing--such as the Hendrick House Dormitory, about 4 blocks east of Illini Union--is described here. If you use this option, please make your own reservations.

MEALS

The Thursday reception and the Friday evening candlelight supper, both with wine, are free to all conference registrants.

The Saturday evening banquet, also with wine, is free to all presenters, chairs and special guests. Other conference registrants who wish to attend the banquet will be asked to contribute $25, payable at the door, in cash or by check made out to the University of Illinois.

The Sunday evening cookout at the home of Miranda Remnek will be free to all conference registrants (those who remain in town!)
