Record Series Number: 12/9/20
Volume: 31.5 Cubic Feet

Arrangement: Series I: Music, ca. 1940-1999 (Boxes 1-45) This series contains Hindsley's arrangements of operatic, chamber and orchestral European repertoire for band. The music is arranged as Hindsley transcriptions followed by original compositions by Hindsley and other composers, arranged alphabetically by composer. Some titles have duplicate copies that contain marginalia and annotations, and they are kept because they provide an insight into Hindsley's arranging and conducting style and technique. These are marked with the phrase "contains marginalia" in the contents listing. Whenever possible an identification of the format of the music for each title (i.e., full score, condensed score, piano score, and parts) has been identified with the corresponding abbreviations: FS, CS, PS, P. These arrangements are still used by band conductors around the country and include compositions by prominent international and local composers, and include titles such as Hail to the Orange, Hymn to Illinois, and On Football Parade. Series II: Personal Papers and Administrative Records, ca. 1907-1998 (Boxes 46-80, 92- 109) This series is comprised of Hindsley's correspondence, teaching materials, concert programs, sound and video recordings, photographs, uniforms, administrative records, publications by Hindsley, lecture notes, news clippings and scrapbooks that were used by Hindsley during his career as a conductor and educator at Indiana University, Cleveland Heights Schools, the United States Army and the University of Illinois at Urbana - Champaign. The material is arranged chronologically. Series III: Professional Association Correspondence, Photographs and Memorabilia, ca.1931-1999 (Boxes 81-89, 92 and 106) This series contains his correspondence, photographs, conference proceedings and documents related to his affiliations to professional band organizations such as the American Bandmasters Association in which he served as President in 1957, and the College Band Directors National Association in which he also served as president in 1947, arranged chronologically alphabetically by organization name and then chronologically within each grouping of documents. Series IV: Awards, Memorials and Memorabilia, ca.1905-2002 (Boxes 90-92, and 109) This series includes Hindsley's personal correspondence, Indiana University Yearbook, photographs, obituaries and other materials that pertain to his family life; and it is arranged chronologically.
