STARTING A NEW JOURNAL

Founding a new journal with colleagues in your field may be an option to consider. Partnership with a scholarly society is one possible route to journal publication. Fed up with their publisher's pricing policies, the editorial board of Elsevier's Journal of Algorithms resigned in protest in January 2004 and went on to found a new competing journal, ACM Transactions on Algorithms, in partnership with the Association for Computing Machinery.

Given the efficiencies and cost reductions that online publishing have introduced, launching a new non-profit electronic journal is another possibility. SPARC, the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition, has put together resources for further exploration of this option:
