EXPOSURE AND IMPACT Access is limited to those individuals and institutions that can afford subscription rates. Access is limited to those who can afford to subscribe. However, increasingly society publishers are making the older issues available for free to all.

Society sponsored publications are generally highly valued within the research community.
Research suggests that Open Access articles are read and cited at a higher rate.
ACADEMIC PROMOTION Journals vary in quality. One index of quality that is often used is the journal's Impact Factor, which can be looked up in Journal Citation Reports. Nearly 300 OA journals are currently listed in the JCR. Society sponsored publications are generally highly valued within the research community. Many OA journals do not yet have the same prestige factor as their traditional counterparts. But this is changing with time. Educate your colleagues by demonstrating that many OA journals have the same high standards of peer review. See bibliography about the citation impact of OA journals.
