Scholarly Communication and Publishing

Who Are We?:

The Scholarly Communication and Publishing Unit is a division of the Library's Office of Research. The Unit is currently under development, but it will ultimately coordinate the Library's user-facing services associated with Open Access, Copyright, Digital Repositories for Scholarly Publications (including IDEALS), and Library Publishing Services.

Publishing Services Mission:

The Scholarly Communication and Publishing Unit develops innovative, sustainable structures for the broad dissemination and enduring preservation of the scholarly conversation, towards the goal of ensuring that the benefits of scholarship accrue to everyone. We collaborate with libraries, research centers and institutes, departments, and individual faculty and staff to lower the cost of producing and disseminating quality educational and scholarly publications. We also work with other public institutions seeking to publish scholarly material or general-interest works that will benefit the people of Illinois and the world. If you would like to discuss a proposal, please send your proposal information to Harriett Green, Interim Head of the Scholarly Communication and Publishing, at green19 AT illinois DOT edu. If you have other questions, feel free to contact Harriett directly by email or by phone at 217-333-4942.

Currently, the Scholarly Communication and Publishing Unit is serving as the publications and workflows group for a $1m Andrew W. Mellon Foundation funded grant project called Publishing Without Walls. This project includes capacity building for future publishing services at the University of Illinois Library, including:

  • Journal Publishing Services
  • "Networked Book" Publishing Services
  • Other Publishing Services
