In an effort to better accommodate core, working reference collections in the Reading Room and
in departmental libraries, a portion of the reference collection has been designated to be housed
in a distinct section in the Main Stacks. The Stacks Reference Collection is located on the south
side of Deck 5, close to the entrance to the stacks. The collection is building-use only, and a
small working area for users has been set up along the south wall behind the collection.
Titles in this collection currently experience low use but have enduring research value.
Examples include national bibliographies and periodical indexes, the majority of which may be
available online but without retrospective coverage or specific functionality (e.g., cross
references) that the print copy offers. The nature of these works argues against sending them to
off-site shelving, but moving them together to the Main Stacks frees valuable space in the Reading
Room and in departmental libraries, while increasing convenience for users and reference staff by
having them in a central, easily accessible location.
