Video Poetry

Video Contest
for High School Students

Produce a 1 to 5-minute cell phone, tablet, or whatever video ‘interpretation’ of “Speech to the Young,” by Gwendolyn Brooks (individual or group projects welcomed) and share it with us.

Interpretation can mean anything you want it to mean: rap it, snap it, hip-hop it, turn it into an opera aria, whatever!

Winning video will be screened at the April 24, 2014 Celebration of the Gwendolyn Brooks Archives. (7:30 at Lincoln Hall Theater—admission free!)

Winning video receives $300 donation to your favorite school club or library! All entrants receive a book by Gwendolyn Brooks.

Entries are due April 15, 2014.

Speech to the Young: Speech to the Progress-Toward

Say to them,
say to the down-keepers,
the sun-slappers,
the self-soilers,
the harmony-hushers,
"even if you are not ready for day
it cannot always be night."
You will be right.
For that is the hard home-run.

Live not for battles won.
Live not for the-end-of-the-song.
Live in the along.

Read it, think about it, film it!

Deadline Extended, Entries due April 15!
