Scope and Contents of the Materials

Born in 1942, Slade received his Ph.D. in English from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1972. Leonard Slade is a distinguished professor of English at Kentucky State University (1965-1988) and State University of New York at Albany (1988-present). In addition to academic activities, which include various administrative responsibilities, he has also published several volumes of poetry and won numerous awards for writing and teaching. The Slade collection includes books, clippings, correspondence, documents, manuscripts, photographs, and some miscellaneous items.

Biographical Note

Born March 13, 1942, Leonard A. Slade, Jr. is tenured professor and past chair of the department of Africana studies at the State University of New York in Albany, where he lives with his wife Roberta and daughter. He received his bachelor's degree in English from North Carolina's Elizabeth City State University, his master's degree in English from Virginia State University, and his Ph.D. in English from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He taught at Kentucky State University, where he was also Chair of the Division of Literature, Languages, and Philosophy, and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. In addition to being widely published in magazines and journals, he has published 15 books, including 10 books of poetry: Another Black Voice: A Different Drummer, The Beauty of Blackness, I Fly Like a Bird, The Whipping Song, Vintage, Fire Burning, Pure Light, Neglecting the Flowers, Lilacs in Spring, and Elizabeth and Other Poems. Symbolism in Herman Melville's Moby Dick: From the Satanic to the Divine is his second book of literary criticism.
