Collection Overview
Scope and Contents of the Materials
Pulitzer Prize winning poet, translator, and environmental activist; the archive consists of books, notes, manuscripts, correspondence, ideas for poems, published and unpublished works, translations of other author's works, critical writings by Merwin, and select writings about Merwin. The Merwin archive presents the opportunity to study the poet's work, for research into the overall development of American poetry in this century, and an increased understanding of the poetic process. The library holds five major collections of Merwin manuscripts: Merwin-1, Merwin-2, Merwin-3, Merwin-4, Merwin-5.
Biographical Note
W. S. Merwin is one of America's most distinguished writers, praised for his poetry, his prose, and his translation of foreign literary works into English.

Acquisition Method:
The first installment of material (Merwin-1) was acquired by the Library in 1984; subsequent installments were acquired in 1988, 1990 and 1993.
