Scope and Contents of the Materials

Flodden W. Heron was a bibliographer and collector of rare materials on Lewis Carroll. He published the following articles on the subject: "The 1866 Appleton Alice" in The Colophon 1.3 (1935): 422-7; "Lewis Carroll, amateur photographer: the story of two photographs" Camera Craft (Nov.1938): 507-511; and "Lewis Carroll: Inventor of Postage Stamp Case" Stamps 26.12 (March 1939). Flodden W. Heron's collection consists of Lewis Carroll realia, correspondence, and photographs. The collection also includes Heron's typescripts, dealers' catalogs, and ephemera relating to Lewis Carroll, Alice Liddell Hargreaves, and Alice in Wonderland. Books from the Heron collection have been dispersed among the Rare Book and Manuscript Library book collections. Stickers in the inner covers reveal that these items came from the Heron collection, but currently, we do not have an inventory of these books. A list is being compiled and will be added to the finding.

Note: Heron Deed Box 4 in previous finding aid. Bill Becker in 1955-72 finding aid notes that all of these photographs were taken by Lewis Carroll, including one self-portrait. We have reasons to believe, however, that not all are original Carroll photographs. One photo is identified on the face (in error) as Dodgson; it was removed and sold separately according to a pencil note inside the album cover. The paper labeled 'Response to commandments in Greek' believed not to be written by Dodgson. One photo is housed in its own separate folder; this may be the photograph that was removed from the album.
