Scope and Contents of the Materials

This volume is a nautical lexicon composed by Sir Henry Manwayring (or Mainwaring).The lexicon, which predates John Smith's Sea-Man's Grammar and Dictionary (1691), includes the first known instances of several terms. This copy, which differs from the 1644 printed edition, was transcribed by Ralph Crane.

Collection Historical Note

Henry Manwayring (or Mainwaring) (1587-1653) was a native of County Shropshire, England. He received a degree from Brasenose College, Oxford, in 1602, and began his nautical career in 1602. He soon turned to piracy against Spanish ships and began a successful reign along the Barbary Coast. After receiving a royal pardon and a knighthood, Manwayring rose through the ranks of the English navy, later serving as the captain of several ships.
