W.S. Merwin Correspondence

William Stanley Merwin, one of America's most distinguished writers, has been praised for his poetry, his prose, his translation of foreign literary works into English, and for his environmental activism. He has published voluminously for over fifty years and has received numerous literary awards and prizes, including the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1971. The Merwin archive at The Rare Book & Manuscript Library contains books, notes, manuscripts, correspondence, ideas for poems, published and unpublished works, translations of other author's works, critical writings by Merwin, and select writings about Merwin. The Merwin archive presents the opportunity to study the poet's work, the development of American poetry in the last century, and the poetic process itself.
