Illinois Media Census Phase Two
The University of Illinois Media Census, a collaboration between the University Library and the Center for Multimedia Excellence (CME), is moving to Phase Two—collecting data on the time-based physical media held on the Urbana-Champaign campus.
- Phase One: conducted during the spring of 2011, Phase One saw the collection of valuable data and identified departments holding analog and digital media across the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus. Phase Two uses this data to begin a deeper examination of these and other currently unidentified collections. The Media Census survey questionnaire can be accessed here.
- Phase Two: Beginning in June 2012, departments with holdings of film, video, and sound recordings stored on physical formats will be interviewed with the goal of establishing the size, format types, and physical condition of these collections. These materials, part of the legacy of the University of Illinois, are at risk of permanent degradation and obsolescence—making the urgency to identify them great. The analysis of the data generated by the census will be used as the basis for determining future preservation actions for the University's audiovisual heritage.
