Media Reformatting
The Preservation Program is in the nascent stages of developing a digital reformatting program which will allow limited in-house data recovery from obsolete physical digital media and trusted vendor recovery. In 2010, this piloted with a trial project to transfer collections materials on 3 1/2 and 5 1/4 inch floppy disks. A brief report on the success of this project was written up by the graduate student who set up the workflow and equipment.
Digital Reformatting Service
Do you have collections material locked away on a 5.25” floppy disk? Unable to open old word processing files due to software obsolescence? The Preservation Unit’s Digital Reformatting service can assist you in recovering data.
Media Reformatting:
In-house reformatting services are available for a number of storage media (PC or Mac) including:
* 5.25” floppy disks
* 3.5” floppy disks
* Iomega ZIP disks
* Data CDs
* Hard Disk Drives
Trusted vendor services are available for other digital formats. If you’re unsure of the media format or do not see your format listed please contact the Digital Preservation Coordinator, Tracy Popp, for assistance: tpopp2@illinois.edu
File Format Migration:
Migrating content between formats can be more challenging than moving content from one storage media to another. Software availability and dependencies can prevent successful document rendering. The Digital Preservation Coordinator can work with you to help recover content.
