Heavy Duty Boxes

Procedure:

Heavy Duty Boxes

Collection items which are over-sized, heavy or uniquely shaped, require special enclosures which are sturdier than those which we make from "folding box board." For heavy-duty boxes we can use a variety of materials, such as barrier board or foam board. Such boxes can be made in the same fashion as the lighter weight ones; the main difference is that the board will not be pre-perforated.

This stack of large newspapers is too heavy and unwieldy for the thin, folding box board (cream color) so we choose the stouter barrier board (blue color). After measuring the width and length of the newspaper stack, we cut down a large sheet of the barrier board to match these dimensions.

We perforate the board (shown above) by "stuttering" a scalpel point across its top surface; this breaks the surface tension of the paper. The board can then be bent or folded cleanly along this perforated line; it is bent away from the perforations.
